Were they in a tribrach on top of a tripod at the time?

It's hard to imagine anyone breaking into a survey rig and stealing only a prism and carrier. Is there more to the story?

They were not taken from the tribrach. I do not lock the back of my truck on a job.
I either dropped them along the traverse or someone lifted them while I was away.

If you want a long story. I have turned the truck inside out, as well as my office and closet. I have walked the job site as have two others. I posted the serial number here because someone might see it come up for sale somewhere. If there is a good ending I will let you know.

About ten years ago I bought a property (that now has my house on it) that had a walking trail alongside. I was doing topo, and left the pole with a 360 prism leaning against a tree near the trail. Next day, I remembered, and went back. It was gone. I posted a sign there offering a reward of $50. A guy called me, said he had to get it back, as he had sold it to another surveyor. I did get it back.

One day, I had an old tripod in the back of the truck. I came across the Hwy Dpt signs, SURVEY CREW. I pulled up to the party chief, and said: Ya wanna buy a thingy that the survey instrument sits on? Showed him the back of the truck. He was suspicious. Asked where I had got it, I told him it was beside the road, about 6 mos ago, and it had a upside down mirror on top. (Now he is really popping!) How much did it want for it. I said I was not too sure, but I was tired of carrying it around. I finally admitted it was mine, shook his hand, and gave him my card. He was so relieved!

Nothing like a Hwy Dpt crew!

So, you tried to sell him something that was yours and.....what...I don't get it. No, I get what you're saying - just don't get what your point was there.

I was pulling his leg, because he thought he had the red handed thief, right in front of him, and was trying to remember which crew was missing a set of legs, with prism. Anyway, I did not push it too far...
