Last week we posted about Sir George Everest, and his role as the Survey General of India. He held this role from 1830-1843, and among the surveys conducted as part of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India was the Calcutta Base Line. Some of these survey towers are still standing today! Have you ever been to India and seen one of these towers?

I was in Chennai, the city the English knew as Madras, recently.
I went chasing the original Great Triangulation Survey Baseline at St Thomas Mount.
The only thing I found was an old engraving that showed a tall flagpole, long since gone.
My bet was that, visible from miles away, they used that flagpole for sighting
