Being in Burke county you probably have eaten at Abele's Restaurant before. I ate there when I did a survey on the water tank in downtown Morganton.

I initially trained under a surveyor from WNC (Weaverville) and feel blessed for it. Didn't work for him long before he went back to the mountains and boundary work, but he left a lasting impression.
WNCSurveyor, I know where a Topcon APL1A can be had on the cheap if you're interested. I personally know all 4 owners (I was one of 'em) and it's a good robot, much better than the 8203 it was replaced with back in the day. One word of caution though, you'd best be healthy because there's nothing lite about it.
I used the same setup except a 303 several years ago. To the best of my memory, if you push the little triangle button on the instrument until it is reading slope distance and then hit the button on the 48 to take the shot it will work. Another words the instrument has to be trying to read the distance first. Hope this helps and congrats!
Congratulations on getting licensed!
I would suggest reposting your question under a different category, "Computers and Tech", perhaps. There are some very knowledgeable individuals reading this forum who might not have seen it under the introductions category. There is almost definitely someone here who can help you - sorry it's not me.
