Hi All,
I am very new to the world of surveying and am here to try learn- so thought I would say hi. Basically, I am an archaeologist from Sydney, Australia. My main specialty is drones and multi-spectral cameras. I just got awarded a little fellowship to do digital recording of a site called Zagora, in Greece.
Part of what we do is obviously use ground control points in any photogrammetric models or infrared images we take. Previously, I have had a surveyor on site helping me. But now I must go out on my own.
Happy to give more info on the project if people want.
I am here to learn as much as I can. I have been offered some old Leica RX1250 with a ATX1230GG for an ok price, but nervous to buy it primarily as the modem is a GFU24 modem. The age old problem that archaeology gets little funding, so I have basically no money to buy gear.
Anyways, after any help and if anyone here is an expert with the Leica's and is willing to offer me some help= I'd be forever grateful!
Thanks so much
Hugh
Welcome HughT,
You don't sound Australian, at all.;)
JA, PLS SoCal
Welcome Hugh.
I wish i could help you on Leica, but haven't used a Leica for about 13 years
Hugh, welcome to the forum...
Howdy HughT
Welcome to the site
No help here, I have been using Sokkia equipment
Be patient, plenty of Leica users here
Hi All,
I suppose I should say, if anyone knows somewhere to get good second hand equipment, please let me know. Otherwise, willing to ask and listen a lot! Thanks
Welcome friend. I have always been interested in archaeology surveying. Please keep us posted. Someone will come along soon to help you with your equipment request.
Welcome Hugh, I Can't answer your question but someone here will!
anybody else thinking of running away to Greece??
Hugh,
I've been using leica equipment for over 3 years now, the models you've listed I have not used but in my experience all leica gear works the same, just updated software and functions. Willing to lend a hand if I can.
"Leica, when it has to right.... just not right now."
Howdy Hugh, good to hear from you. Keep us posted on what artifacts you get to survey. Maybe post a pic of an old cool bone or tooth!
Welcome Shawn and thank you for your participation, That's what this site is all about plus more. You will love it here. 🙂

Welcome Hugh.
Instead of equipment, why not retain a Greek surveyor? Could save you a whole lot of time, money, and hassle in so many ways. Might be a new friend and guide of sorts. Good luck.

I was sorry I had to miss a recent public lecture by a professor at a local college about her involvement with the Lechaion Harbor project in Corinth. I enjoyed her series of talks a couple years ago about Greek history and archaeology.

That's the site. I worked there for 3 years, but this is my own little digital project on the same site in preparation of them going back again in the next few years!

It's something I want to get into. I do a lot of work here in Australia too so its just a natural progression and one I want to learn.

Do a search on this site and you'll find a couple old threads discussing the equipment you mention.
That's an interesting project to say the least. I have always been interested in archaeology-astronomy sites. Mayan, Druid. Nazca lines etc.
Read a lot and caught a few lectures of Anthony Aveni when he did a residency at Tulane University.
As to your ?, I would think Leica is definitely your correct choice. It is probably widely used being a European market.
You can take a chance and try to
Locate something from a Leica dealer there.
You should try to
Richard Abbott an OZ surveyor from Adelaide who used to be a frequent here. He was a Leica user and very supportive of all their products.
@RADU see if he responds to
the shout out.
He can be found on FB.
Good luck!
