Would it possible, if a thread is moderated and posts removed, could the offending parties receive an email explaining why the posts were removed? I've noticed lately a few going missing.
Thanks,
Kris
Were they your posts? I hadn't noticed you posting anything naughty. Also, Wendell, are you working on a breathalyzer app for this website? That might solve a lot of the moderating chores that you and Angel deal with.
Having been a moderator for Wendell on another website I can say that I warned and warned many times before I dumped one person's post. Afterwards I let Wendell know and why. I was having direct email with the offender and he refused to edit his comments and/or back off. So... I dumped his a$$.
Moderating a website is like doing customer service. They are both practically thankless.

Yes. However, I don't mind it if I screwed up. Id just like to be let know why. It's possible that I didn't realize I was being a certain way and could correct the behavio(u)r.
Moderating
I moderate a flyfishing forum board. We usually give warnings, and we always give an email when we post. We have a 3 strikes and your out policy, the third time we have to take action, you and your IP address(s) are banned.

You've got to tell us what antics go on at a fly fishing forum that would get you warned, much less banned? This sounds good. Is it as simple as not like a particular fly, or chastising the tying technique one used? Differences on what insect the fly really looks like?

Kris,
The list is long and mighty. People slamming other people for fish handling (of catch and release fish), giving away "secret spots", opinions on gear, but usually it is the same as here. Someone gets good and tuned up on beer, scotch or whatever, and the conversation turns ugly (politics, race, sexual orientation, location of posters, etc. etc...) My experience is that once a thread takes a turn towards the dark side (off topic of the board), people jump on it thinking it is OK and all fun, and it goes all to h-e-double pitch forks. Been doing it for 5 years. Lots of Trolls (people who find forum boards and make it a point to rile things up) out there.
By the way, I do have some pink flies, they work good.
I removed a few posts from a single thread after another user tossed out what I viewed as a personal attack against you. You responded and the conversation became more of a bickering match, not to mention that it went off-topic from the original intent of the thread. So I took the original insulting post and all the responses to it (including sub-responses) and removed them, since none of them were in reference to the original topic.
I don't always notify everyone when I remove posts. Usually it's because of time and I spend an awful lot of time here as it is. I'm not complaining at all, I rather enjoy working on the site. It's just time-consuming and although I have help, the bulk of the decisions come right back to me. So if you don't always get notified, feel free to ask (either here or via email) and I'll be happy to explain.
🙂
Cool Wendell. Thanks for keeping up the good work. It also warms my heart to see that another person saw what I saw.
