Updating account information, I was forced to adopt the default avatar and delete the address from the box that represented my current avatar.
Otherwise no changes could be made. Error message was "Please type web address for avatar"
That error you get suggests to me that you have selected the avatar by URL option, but haven't entered a URL for the image. You could instead select the upload option and then upload the avatar image.
Yes I had done that previously (uploaded an avatar).?ÿ The address in the URL box showed a location that was not a proper web address, it was something like /wp/upload from memory
But when I changed my location, it would not let me save changes as it considered the address to be wrong. I had not changed the address. I went back and did it a 2nd time just in case.

Well I'm sure I can upload it again some time (once i've found the file), I'm not that bothered.
But I was just pointing out the code doesn't appear to work quite right on this page in case you wanted to have a look at it.
