I hate to be a gloomy-gus but could there be a separate category for sports? I just don't care about them that much and when they're in the catch-all non-surveying category, I click on them and find out I don't care about what they're talking about. I watch the Sacramento Kings when they're playing and if the SF Giants get into a World Series I'd probably watch part of it, but I've totally lost interest in the NFL, never cared about college sports, I check out Wimbledon when I get up early enough, if I'm totally bored on a weekend, I'll turn on a golf tournament until I get motivated to do something productive. Do you get my drift? Nascar? Are you kidding me? Now, beach volleyball is a sport that deserves a lot more press, if you ask me.

Richard Nixon had time to watch sports on TV, but I don't.

It's probably good for people to watch sports, but I just don't have time.

Funny, I was thinking that very same thing earlier today. 🙂

BEEEEP! unsportsmanlike conduct on the OP, 5 minute penalty... 😉
On the old site we had a sports, hobbies, and recipes category. I enjoy the recipes posted from various surveyors and of course some sports smack talk. BOOMER SOONER! 😉

Sports/Recreation category added.

I tried to move the appropriate postings to the new Sports category and I think I got the bulk of them, but as you might imagine, it would be easy to miss a few out of over 18,200 postings...

I'm offended! I suggest a new category and get jumped all over and the general sentiment is the fewer the better. Here a suggestion is made and it's created in a few minutes and all previous posts are moved. What's so special about this one?

Dave
My understanding was that Wendell wanted to keep his hotrod board with the basics and would consider other categories as time passed and depending on complaints or requests. With college football heating up then many complained about these being in the General category.

The sports fans can still post but the ones that do not like sports can turn them off. Personally, I didn't mind either way but I like sports so I'm in the vocal minority. It was really no biggie to me.

I'm really not understanding why it upset you so much.

Dave,

I wasn't sure what you were talking about, so I found your post asking about a "political humor" category. I read all the comments and didn't think they were nasty at all. I think Wendell made a good point about waiting and watching how things shake out before creating a category.. Could it be that he was considering doing the sports cat. given that college and pro football are both getting under way, and taking up a lot of posts?? If so, then an actual request for one on the board may have been the final straw in the creation, right?

I think that Wendell has probably got a lot of requests to move the Sports to it's own category. Some feel about sports like some of us feel about the P&R. We would just like to be able to turn them off.

I am not seeing the problem with putting a political cartoon in the P&R. No matter if it's funny or not, then it will usually bring on the typical responses.

Big Difference

I expect that Sports will not appear for those who are not registered. The same as P&R. That will give the board a more serious appearance to the outsider.

On the other hand, almost everybody enjoys a little Humor. One-sided humor, however, will automatically be disliked by many.

It is a penalty flag, usually thrown after a rule infraction during a football contest. I do not know what CD Bank means, it was the best picture that I could find of a penalty flag.

I posted it because I felt this blasphemous talk about sports warranted it. You know, personal foul, unsportsmanlike conduct? I do not know how it is in Cali, but here in Texas you root for your team all season win or lose. Those that pay attention only if their home team makes the championship are considered bandwagoners and are not considered good fans. If you do not care for sports, that is ok, no problem there, to each there own. Just do not try to steal the glory when the team is on top from those that toughed it out with the team.

Like most officiating it is very subjective, so take it for what it is worth.

Is what Dave got all upset about?
Gees. I think most of us have way bigger things to get upset about than that.
I know I sure do.

Big Difference

Dave is upset because a few weeks ago he suggested a new category for political humor. The premise being that those,(and there are quite a few of us), who do not take politics too seriously could post a cartoon aimed at either party and enjoy the humor in it without getting flamed by the PnR officiandos. The only thing is, a new category would not be a safe haven from those types, because they are how they are, and will attack whomever disagrees with them in a surveying thread, much less a clearly political one. There is already a political category, and Wendell did not want to overkill it, understanably. Dave somehow took that as a snub at him, which I am pretty sure was not, and it has been festering for a couple of weeks. When Wendell peeled off the sports into its own category, at the suggestion of another poster, Dave seemed to have had more than he could stand, feeling that his suggestion had just as much merit as this other posters, and made what is probably a hasty decision to abandon his friends here at "the Leg". I hope that after cooling off and reflecting on it, maybe going back through and reading the original posts again, that he sees that Wendell was not, not taking stock in his suggestion, just that it did not seem feasible right now, and reconsiders his decision. Daves knowledge and experience will be missed noticably in the surveying category, which is the meat and potatos of this site. All of the other categories are just fluff.

Sports for Wendell.

I probably watched a couple of high school games... but that's it! I chose randomly except for Oregon.

I remember the sports cat. request. I vaguely remember something about political humor. I agree that would have been overkill. Personally I find most things political as laughable regardless of the post attempt.

You could overkill sports as well: "College football", "Pro football". "Baseball - AL", "Baseball - NL", "Tennis", "Basketball", "Golf", "NASCAR", "Indy cars", "Formula 1", .... ad nauseum...

Dave, forget about it and post on!!

I have received many requests to add a sports category and maybe two to add a political humor category. Secondly, the sports category received absolutely no votes against it, while I was pelted with votes against the political humor category idea.

I could understand being offended if both ideas had rendered equally favorable support (or lack thereof) and one was chosen over the other. However, in this case, the votes are clearly in favor of a sports category, while the votes are clearly not in favor of a political humor category.

I am sorry you are offended. I can't please everyone but I do my best and I try to make decisions based on our great users. It is very much a democratic system but nobody aside from myself knows how many yes or no votes I receive. If someone suggests an idea, I'm often overwhelmed with emails about how good or bad of an idea it is. So, before you go thinking it's something against you specifically, think about what might be going on behind the scenes.

As for the "within a few minutes" comment, the sports category has been requested several times since about the third day of our existence. I am just now creating it.

Also, I'd like to point out that donations are greatly appreciated and help pay our server costs and other expenses. But people who donate do not receive a "special" voice with the power to make significant changes to the board -- it is run in a very democratic way despite who donated and how much they sent.

Thank you and I hope you understand. Running this board is certainly not a simple task, but one that I overtly enjoy and will continue to do so. Challenging? Definitely. Fun? Absolutely. Giving up? Never!
