When I refresh the RPLS Today homepage, or navigate to it from another page, I'm getting very slow response times -- I see "Waiting for rplstoday.com" for about 9 seconds before the page loads.?ÿ Once the load starts it goes fast, but only after that initial wait.?ÿ When I ping rplstoday.com (104.25.137.114) I get a snappy response, 32ms or thereabouts.?ÿ I don't remember it being this slow in the past.?ÿ Has something changed?
I have a really fast cable connection, so I don't notice anything more than a very brief load time, maybe a half second. I cleared my cache and reloaded and it took maybe a full second. It's pretty slanted in my favor though, since I can regularly get 120mbps internet connection with very little latency. So, I ran a couple external tests and here's what I get (on the home page):
GT Metrix: https://cl.ly/8d5e0422756f (this is coming from Dallas, TX)
Pingdom Tools: https://cl.ly/c18a6dd3f188 (this is coming from San Francisco, CA)
So, it could be your ISP, or it could be a hop between you and the site, both of which are likely out of our control. However, that's just a guess on my part.
The caching system at the server has been freaking out a bit here and there, so I can't help but wonder if it's not wreaking havoc for some folks. The server techs are looking into it for me right now. I'll go ahead and clear all caches on this end and see if you can tell a difference in the meantime.
Here's a demonstration of me clicking from this thread to the home page: https://cl.ly/50af181f7fbc
Not trying to rub it in, just trying to make you look crazy. LOL j/k man 😀
The "Waiting for..." lag has dropped to about 3 seconds now, don't know if it's something that happened on my end or on yours.?ÿ However, I've noticed the lag for days now on my phone as well, which is going on Verizon's LTE network, not my office network.
Here in Belgium I noticed also a slower response the last days ... not measured but feels as 3 seconds.
christof.
Both my home computer and my phone on its data, in first opening my bookmark (direct to the Recent Threads page) have a noticeable delay, maybe 3 seconds, this week that wasn't always there.?ÿ Opening a thread isn't as fast as I think I remember but maybe faster than the first page.?ÿ It isn't been enough I'd file a complaint, but I'll chime in.
This site is on a really nice hosting server, albeit not necessarily top-of-the-line, so 3 seconds of load time is actually pretty acceptable. So anytime it's less than that, I'm somewhat surprised and maybe even a little bit amazed. 😉 Now, if I had a dedicated "server guy" to constantly maintain and optimize a server, and I did indeed move the site to a super-awesome, world-smashing server, of course I would expect much more. But I don't have the budget of, say, a large publication or news organization, so I have to live within those confines.
But, as I mentioned previously, something's not quite right with caching and I'm hoping they'll figure it out soon. I'm thinking there's a reasonable chance that's the actual problem here.
Additionally, I know there are some optimizations yet for me to do, both in terms of speed and usability, I just need to find a relatively good-sized chunk of time to throw at it.
It has been taking 4-5 seconds for me to do about all functions on here for some time.
Today I noticed down in the left corner while it was loading "waiting for facebook.com"?ÿ Note sure if that helps.?ÿ I don't use facebook so it is probably some module installed here.
Checking again this evening I get about 9 seconds wait time for this site, versus a second or less for nytimes.com and ebay.com.?ÿ (Just FYI, not a complaint.)
3sec on most attempts and I have ESet checking all internet functions and overall computer actions.
Any big waits on my end are probably due to the area wide use over our strained DSL system and our recently bankrupt phone system.
First time tonight it took 15 seconds. ?ÿThe second time was about 12 seconds.
Ten seconds after making the above comment to be able to do anything else.
The site feels faster to me today (15 April 2019) than it did last week, BUT we were having some power/electrical problems last week, and lost power some time over the weekend. So take that for what it's worth (not much!).
