This is a "nit" and not a "mal" but....
Any time you come off the "main" page, the back image goes away and the background becomes black.
Since you can't really see the background image at all anyway, why spend the bandwidth and send it out.
Might as well just pick a "bgcolor" and leave it be.
BTW: nice use of "opacity" in your nodes. (I assume that's what you're using).

As I was clicking to change pages, there was a flash image of the Empire State Building.

I find the image switching distracting. I'd rather not waste all that screen space on an image and would prefer to see more text instead.
Another vote for a solid (actually no image) background option.
Fixed. I removed the image and replaced it with a light grey color. It seems to have cured the issue with the black background in IE after going to an internal page.
