I thought it might be worth posting about the categories and the intent of each.

The following categories are for topics related to land surveying ONLY:

  • Land Surveying
  • Construction/Mining
  • Business/Finance
  • Legal Issues
  • Education/Training
  • CAD/GIS/Scanning
  • Buy/Sell/Trade
  • Stolen Equipment
  • Employment
  • Rest In Peace

The following categories are for topics NOT related to land surveying:

  • General Non-Surveying
  • Politics/Religion (edit: as of 11/07/2012 the P/R category has been removed permanently)
  • Humor

The following category is reserved for SurveyorConnect.com issues and includes feature requests, bug reports or other information specific to the site itself:

  • Site Issues (previously known as "Features/Bugs")

I may add LS: to the beginning of the categories related to land surveying. Either that or somehow mark the non-surveying topics. I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to handle it, if at all. It's still just a consideration.

RIP Is that for dead surveyors, or for topics that should be allowed to RIP?

It is intended as a memorial of sorts for land surveyors who have passed away.

Wendell, you know, people are going to do crap with categories. The usual reason is going to be that they want people, that aren't interested in political threads, to read their 'non surveying' related thoughts to get a 'broader' readership, if you know what I mean. This is an area where you've knocked the ball into the proverbial 'upper deck' with this site. You actually MODERATE the site! (sarcasm on) Wow!, what a novel idea! (sarcasm off)

I JUST WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO FIND OUT WHAT MY PASSWORD IS SO I COULD LOG ON TO THE SITE WITH MOZILLA WITHOUT GETTING A NEW PASSWORD!

Now, I know that this is my fault. And it appears that it's not possible. So just let me say that if anyone has a problem with your category policies you only have reason to hold your head high in that regard, fella.

Thanks to y'all again for providing this site for us and the good job you're doing with it.

Take care,
Ed

Ok, Wendell. Thanks.

I'd sure like to see a place like "The Bilge", where we could put abnoxious conversations, and other miscreant stuff, that is too bad for the regular board, and too good to throw away.

Maybe

"Over the cliff".

"Take it out back"

or something.

and, now that BEER LEG has been explained to me... well it makes sense.

hehe thank you 🙂

Sounds like you may have Firefox set to clear your cookies when you close it, or maybe to not use cookies at all. Also be sure to check the box labeled "Log me in automatically on this computer" when logging in -- this will work, assuming you have allowed cookies in the browser.

You are welcome and thank you, too. It's actually a lot of fun. 😀

D'yall remember the guy that dumpster dived

for his breakfast, and maybe actually slept in the dumpster, and enquired "do you want something... I can bring you some breakfast too!" Well, maybe we could name that bad place "The Dumpster". That would be where conversations that get out of hand are placed. I think it would be embarrasing to have your thread thrown in the dumpster, but it could keep things more civil!

🙂

Just a funny idea.

For Ed and Mozilla users

ED,

Create a bookmark for Beer Leg and place on your Mozilla toolbar so that when Wendell sends you a new password open the properties on the Beer Leg icon on the toolbar copy and paste that link sent by Wendell into properties. This means password link is copied in and you can auto open Beer Leg by clicking your BeerLeg icon.

Must say sometimes I have to repeat open to see my logged in name.

I must be doing something inconsistent. When I log on at home I can see more categories. What's up with that?

It's stored in a cookie on your PC and I suspect it has something to do with conflicting cookies.

I know, I'm just guessing. Maybe try selecting "My Selection" from the category dropdown?

Wendell

I appreciate your help here. FYI

I can see the highlighted(red), all the survey related categories except employment, at home and work. I can only see the black categories at home. As you can see I don't have "My Selection" as a choice.

All Categories
General Non-Surveying
Land Surveying
Construction/Mining
Business/Mining
Legal Issues
Education/Training
CAD/GIS/Scanning

Buy/Sell/Trade
Stolen Equipment
Employment
Politics Religion
Humor

For some reason , every so often Wendell when you post a message, it remains as the top post regardless of how the order of posts are selected on my computer. It sometimes helps to log out and then log in again but even that does not seem to work for me today. I notice also that when I mouse over your name in the title thread, the cursor changes from an arrow to a question mark.

Gordon

The message is 'pinned"
see the lil red dot on the note icon on the left.
Wendell does this to keep the post at the top so all viewers can be notified no matter whattime frame when they log on.
So everyone gets the notice.
slight hub-bub recently over category selection here, so just an announcement of new categories.
he did this with the BL T shirt post also.

Mike

That looks to me like you aren't logged in. The categories in black are not shown to those not logged in. That's the only thing I can think of at the moment...
