Along the lines of Lee Greens thread, we upgraded the firmware in our Hiper II's last Friday. It seemed they were taking longer than normal to fix. We assumed this was the leap second problem. Last Friday everything seemed O.K. after the firmware update.
Fast forward to today. We use a base rover system. My helper is working on a job we've used GPS on before and he started having problems. The base was set on a point we used dozens of times before. We are using this with a Ranger running TDS software. Normally in the upper left corner of the data collection screen it says fixed, float or automonous. Today it would say "code" in this area instead. We have never seen this before. I downloaded the TDS manual and it shows a couple of screen shots that show "code" in this area, but with no explanation of what it means. The weird part is if he held the GPS pole sideways it would fix, but the minute he stood it up in the normal position, it would jump to "code".
So he came back to the office and we set it up outside the office and of course it worked fine. It did briefly see it say "code" but it jumped to fixed almost right away. I have no real idea except maybe there is some kind of radio interfence at the site. We changed channels and we will see how it goes. I called the dealer and he said it must be a TDS problem. Maybe the upgraded firmware makes in not compatible with TDS?? The software in the data collector was upgraded when we bought the HiperII's but that was about 5 years ago. Our dealer doesn't sell TDS products so he wasn't a lot of help.
Anybody know what the "code" means instead of fixed, float or automonous? Any other ideas.?
We are still having problems, at this point I think it radio related, but am unsure. We have tried both a external 35 watt radio and the built in internal radio. We are no more than a few hundred feet from the base. Its not working more than its working.
I know I don't have Topcon in service right now....
BUT
Back when I did, this would help.
When you upgrade your firmware, you also have to download a new almanac.
So, AFTER a big upgrade, (new firmware, is about like all new gears in your transmission), you need a chill pill, and let her download a new almanac, and get itself sorted out. Get out in the open, with both units, and let em cook for 15-20 minutes, while it finishes it's download, from the sats.
It will do it on it's own, but you just hafta give them the time they need, un hindered.

Thanks Nate, but they have been set up plenty long for the ne almanac to be in it. I've also heard the same thing, also applies if you drive a long ways from the previous days setup.
Okay did you do an all reset since getting the new firmware?
Code likely means a Code/Float WAAS solution. Your firmware upgrade may have turned SBAS/WAAS on in your system.
With a Code/Float solution, you are likely one meter accuracy. A Code/Float is not the same thing as a Float solution.
We have reset both units at least twice. The code float thing makes sense. I'm didn't thing the units were WAAS enabled, so thats something to look for. I need to hook up both units to the computer and check all the settings at this point.
We may have narrowed it down to a Glonass problem. Torwards the end of the day we were still have problems and turned Glonass of and it seemed to fix right away. Still not sure though.
OK, I found that when having trouble going fixed in a field, turn off SV 39 (??) I think that was it.... It's been a while!
I have moved on, and am now using a Javad. But, those Topcons, were prone to needing a SV turned off.

Looks like maybe we have it fixed, we rolled back the firmware to the old version and it seems OK now. Most likely a problem between the firmware in the GPS recievers and the TDS software in the Ranger.

I'm having the same type of issue with my Topcon GR5, but it won't let me load the old firmware back into the receiver. It tells me there is an open file error when I try to do so. Anyone else have this issue?
Just saw this, don't know if you resolved your issue or not. You could try a hard reset and then try loading it. It almost sounds like it thinks you are recroding a file or something.

I'm still working on it, but I believe I've narrowed it down to a bad SD card.
I just put a fresh card in and it didn't let me load the old firmware in, but now it lets me log data through Topsurv. I'll see what happens when I try and post process in a bit.
