One person here is going to setup a permanent GPS station on the roof of his office and he is concerned very much about lightening, so he wants to install an earth electrode and he is wondering what type it should be, how close to GPS, how high above GPS antenna, etc

I had no idea what to tell him and I was wondering if you protect your permanent bases from lightening ?

Howdy,

Check out the UNAVCO site.

See http://facility.unavco.org/kb/questions/462/Power+-+Surge+and+Lightning+Protection

Cheers,

Yes, we had a person who knew how to do it install the protection. More for the components inside the building than the antenna's on the outside.

FYI

PROTECTION FROM A SINGLE ROD

A single lightning rod of height H protects objects on the ground within an imaginary "cone of protection" of radius H centered at the base of the rod.
