My greatest bench mark tragedy was the only one I knew was there and GPSable in a county that had no GPSonBM submissions. I drove by and saw it in good condition. I knew it was stable because several years ago I did a level run from the mark at the post office and matched better than I could hope for, putting to rest my suspicions that it wasn't in its original location because it didn't quite match the ties (street widened, RR tracks raised, etc).
Two weeks later I showed up with my receiver and a specially constructed tall pole for the antenna to get it above an obstacle (a railroad signal building). When I drove up I saw the post leaning badly and broken with fresh tire tracks from the heavy equipment that had removed the building.
