I understand the limitations of using a cell phone to obtain latitude and longitude. Given that, do the community members have an opinion about the best iPhone app to use for this purpose? It would be really nice if there is one built in that isn't widely known, rather than having to download something. The downloaded apps have a tendency to start out nice but over time get "upgraded" to something obnoxious.

I found a partial answer. In my phone there is an "Extras" icon, which contains a "Compass" app. It came with the phone. The latitude and longitude is shown below the compass rose. Touching the latitude/longitude for about a second, the word "copy" appears (not very conspicuous). Touch that. Then go to some other app, and paste it in the search area, and it will be shown on a map (if you have cell service or wifi).

But I've only spent 5 minutes trying it out, so don't know if others think something else is better.

I read an article in WIRED that stated the newer phones will soon have a new chip capable of combining GPS and network location technology to give cell phones 1 meter accuracy.

I use Compass from the Smart Tool Package on my android.

Get the app "Theodolite"?ÿ ?ÿ

?ÿ

It works with the camera and stamps the Lat/long on the image.?ÿ It's got a ton of other uses, but just for that it's worth it.?ÿ?ÿ

... stamps the Lat/long on the image ...

With any recent iPhone you can turn on location services for the camera and initialize the compass.?ÿ Photos taken after that will include the Gps Lat/Lon and the GpsDirection in the EXIF tags of the JPG files.?ÿ You can inspect those in Windows with right click > properties.?ÿ Those image properties can then be projected to state plane to include hyperlinked symbols in drawings and more.

I use the theodilite app.?ÿ You can pay for an upgrade and it will show state plane coordinates. Also the mail button will send the photo with a kml, and links to the location on google maps and some other mapping aps

Make that 1-cm accuracy by 2022

Theodolite is a great App! I took some photos of Section corner monuments, looking at them from bearing trees. I was able to identify the individual bearing trees on Google Earth using them.
