Is the instrument actually locked into the tripod? It appears not. Make sure you can slide that locking lever into the locked position.
Yes! It does come out! Very easily. I actually took it out and put it back into the case. 🙂

But, is it locked in place? It will come off very easy if it's not clamped down properly, and won't come off if it is. The picture shows the clamp in the unlocked position.
Yes it does lock. We tried it locked and unlocked and it definitely locks into place. 🙂
Hi Monica,
I think what Vern is trying to say is that he, as a surveyor who often sets up equipment with care, feels very uneasy for you with that piece of equipment sitting precariously on top of the tripod. In order to preserve your piece of equipment without mishap your hands should never leave it until it is clamped in place on a carefully situated tripod.
Good luck,
Dave.

Seeing an inst testing on a tripod, and not fastened, causes all sorts of emotional problems in a surveyor.
It's normal.
I've fallen off a mountain before. But the inst was not hurt.

"you can't fall off a mountain" (Jack Kerouac, Dharma Bums.)
Well, Ok.
Here's the story.
I was just turned 20 yrs old. I had bought a Datsun 710 station wagon. It was red. I went on a survey, up in big fork community. Client was Bill Mizell. I had a Japanese transit. 1970-s vintage. Just a 30" Vernier.
I had my brother with me. And a 200, or 300' tape, plumb bobs. And nails. We traversed across the creek, (Kate's creek) tied into a Ted Cannal survey. And, while hiking up a steep hill, pulling the tape, the ground under me gave way. So, as it gave way, both me, and a piece of earth, and leaves went down. Fell, slid, and fell, some 60 feet. Broke a tripod leg... The lower portion. I cut and trimmed a small tree, set the inst up, indexed it, and it was fine. So, we finished our survey.
Life is like that. 🙂
I'm glad I was not hurt by the ditch bank blade, or H
Machette, I was carrying.

Is this item still available for sale? Will buy it now if possible. I use these in the field and just recently had my work truck burglarized. Would offer $500 for the instrument and base, you can keep the tripod and sell it.
Thank you kindly,
