I am in need of an electric jackhammer for digging up section corners. I was wondering what kind to get. I prefer something in a case with one steel bit or shovel. Also what kind of a generator to get. Appreciate the help I have a bad shoulder after years of using hand tools (not working smart as my old boss used to say). One surveyor I know recommends using DeWalt 40# demo hammer. Please send your suggestions. Thanks

We used a Dewalt SDS Max rotary hammer for years running off a Coleman sport 1850+
generator. The Dewalt bit the dust a couple of years ago and is now replaced with a Milwaukee SDS Max rotary hammer which pulls about 14 amps off the same generator.

GAS jackhammers for surveying

I prefer gas so I don't have a generator riding around in the back of the truck-there's enough stuff back there already. I do know some guys have inverters installed on their trucks to avoid using generators. If I were to go electric the only brand of hammer drill or chipping hammer I would consider would be Hilti. Hands down the best I've ever used.

I have the Atlas Cobra 55 lb gas unit and would like something smaller to save on personal wear and tear as well.

Not too hijack, but...

...Does anyone know where you can find a 30-40lb gas powered jack/chipping hammer. Hilti used to have one +/-15yrs ago, but now I can't find it.

I can recommend the Bosch 11316EVS. I use it with a Honda EG2500 generator. Between the two I have about $1300 invested, but it's been a worthwhile expense.

I primarily use two bits with the Bosch: a 3"x12" chisel and a 4-1/2"x17" clay spade. The chisel gets through the pavement, and the spade provides the extra length and scooping ability to deal with the subgrade material. I wish the spade were a little longer, but generally by the time I reach max depth with it the soil is soft enough to allow effective use of a hand shovel.

Another solution from Bosch is the Bosch 11536VSR Litheon 36-Volt Lithium-Ion 1-Inch SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer, no need for an inverter or generator.

I don't recommend this for excavation use beyond the occasional small hole. While it's great for drilling a dozen or so holes in concrete, it doesn't have the oomph or battery life to take on serious digging in pavement.

I once found myself needing to expose a 3/4" pipe that was under about 4" of AC paving, and I didn't have the demo hammer with me. I chucked a 5/8" bit into the 11536 and commenced to drill into the pavement. I went through both fully-charged batteries making a 6"x6"x4" hole, and still had to do a fair amount of hand-chisel work to finish the job. The 11536 was barely adequate for my immediate need, and the batteries were fully spent upon completion.

Well, maybe I just haven't had to drill a big enough hole, LOL. For stuff under a single lift or chip seal, etc. it works just fine, BUT obviously two batteries will only get you so far! The thing I like is it is small, the LiIon batteries hold a change forever (ready to go in the truck) AND I don't have to haul a can of smelly gas around plus the generator. I would say for all except deep dig outs it will work fine, YMMV though.

You might try ebay, or craigslist, and look for "GAS HAMMER"

Look at this link:

This is big time digging 2' or more. For original corners it is sometimes neccesary to rent a backhoe for the job if it is pavement or gravel. Many good suggestions but dont think they would hold a candle to what we are faced with here on the plains.

would this go through 2' or more feet of road rock or paving?

GAS jackhammers for surveying

Didnt think you could still get powered jackhammers anymore due to the environmentalists.

The Cobra Combi meets EPA regs.
