Best of luck... Do some legwork first. I recently reinstalled to replace a crashed system and Autodesk told me point blank that they will not issue new authorization codes for this older software. So now I'm down a CAD system. I'd hate to see you buy software that you can't activate.

AutoCAD's license is non-transferable except in rare cases like one company being acquired by another. With their change to subscription based licensing I'd bet that getting them to approve a license transfer would be near impossible.

There are, of course, less expensive alternatives to our "friendly" Autodesk. Programs that look and act essentially the same as our beloved AutoCAD. (Yes, there are some but minor differences, but things are close enough there is minimal learning curve)

And yes, these programs can often work with dwg and dxf files.

Honestly, with the way Autodesk has been headed with pricing and fewer features, I'm surprised people seem to be glued to them.
