Here schools are open, it was weird to see the blinking lights at the school zones, they haven't been active since March.?ÿ
SWMBO retired from HS but is teaching a class at the college, they are in the building-in room classes.?ÿ
HS football is going strong, as is the full fall sport line-up.
College sports are eliminated.?ÿ
It seems like every high school has a slightly different approach right now and it is all subject to change overnight.?ÿ Those foolish enough to want to be in crowds can attend football games/volleyball matches/etc. but there are varying rules from school to school as to how that works.?ÿ Most dictate that attendees wear masks and have their temperatures taken before being allowed to enter.?ÿ Concessions stands, if any, are down to pre-packaged items only in most locations.
I was chatting with the father of a fellow who is a football official for high school games.?ÿ He is the lucky guy who gets to handle the football to put it back in play then turn, walk away, grab his whistle, put it in his mouth and give the signal.?ÿ He's having second thoughts as to the possibility of transmission from the sweat-covered ball to his mouth area a hundred times per game.
@holy-cow As a retired ice hockey official with over 20 years experience I would be very fearful of working a game right now. USA hockey has gone to on-line seminars in order to minimize contact between referees but expects them to take the ice with 42 players and a hand full of coaches and scorekeepers.?ÿ We all know that players want to compete and will be on the pitch even when they are too sick to be even out of the house or unaware that they have been exposed. The hand shake at the end of the game, while sportsman like, will become a thing of the past. It only takes one. To transmit a virus which can spread quickly and indiscriminately. I imagine that most of the officials in school sports are older and probably work several games a week.?ÿ All three Seattle Mariners games this week have been postponed because someone on the other team had a questionable test.
@holy-cow Some of the officials here are using a "handheld" device to "whistle" the beginning and ending of play.?ÿ The first games of the season are tomorrow night so we'll see how it works.?ÿ My baby girl teaches Health Science in high school and is a Certified Athletic Trainer.?ÿ They have been back in school for almost a month now.?ÿ They did have some COVID cases, they were quarantined.?ÿ The school did go to three days a week in class and two days a week virtual.?ÿ They're still learning as they go.?ÿ ANYONE who says they have all the answers is full of it.

Good idea! Maybe adapt a can of compressed air to accommodate a whistle. Can anyone say Shark Tank?
