I'm considering a presentation regarding the 1797 and 1808 survey and resurvey of the Connecticut Western Reserve(northeast Ohio).

I have worked on this, off & on for quite a few years and feel like I want to finish this project

While i sit with my morning coffee(on my boat) ... somewhat off the cuff ...

The 1797 resurvey of the west line of Ohio actually followed a previous survey a number(about 10) years earlier(Ellicott Line), while the runs of the townships were newly cleared with about 25 or so feet vistas ... should be about 50') while running the town lines. Posts were erected every mile(80 chains), with additional posts set from any subsequent crossing surveyor(generally two posts in each corner).

I am looking for photos of cut lines through woods(somewhat virgin is possible) in various stages of reforestation or succession to better envision, understand and show what a surveyor, following five or ten years later, might actually be looking at. I have never seen a cut line in virgin or near-virgin forest, although I've seen gas-lines and such ... but those are almost always through fields and more scrub-type foliage, are maintained or mowed and are not a good comparison.

Virginal timber usually has marks on some trees and they may be painted if maintained.

There is little or no undergrowth to cut as the canopy keeps out sunlight.

The leaves may be several feet deep and appear as peat in places.

Not any around here anymore.......even on Government lands.

"The 1797 resurvey of the west line of Ohio", I believe you mean the east line?? The other west.

Actually ... yes the WEST line of Pennsylvania ... not Ohio ... nonetheless ...

What I'm looking for are pictures of cleared vistas and lines through virgin or similar woodlands. The reason for the pictures are only to show how undergrowth takes hold under what was heavy tree canopy and to get an idea how the cleared lines might've looked after a few years in sunlight.
