If I remember correctly, when I started surveying in 1988 one of the party chiefs I worked with had spent some time as a high school math teacher before changing careers.?ÿ Kind of stood out because, out of the half a dozen crew chiefs, he was the one that didn't refer to me as the "college puke"
Dude kinda looks like Dale Watson
Joe Bell switched from being an MD to land surveyor in his mid 30s(?).?ÿ I've always thought that is one heck of a big leap.
And Joe Bell was what every surveyor I know professed to want to be: an OB-GYN.
Reminds me of the old joke:
Doctor needs his land surveyed, calls Joe.?ÿ Joe surveys the land and charges him $5000.?ÿ The doctor hit the ceiling.?ÿ "You were only out here two hours!?ÿ That's $2500 an hour!?ÿ I'm a doctor and I don't charge that much!"
Joe replies, "I didn't charge that much either when I was a doctor."
He probably switched jobs for cheaper E & O insurance. OB is about as likely as any to get sued.
In 1979 I had a crew chief for about 1 year who had a physics degree from MIT. He was a very good surveyor and could tolerate the weather, wear muddy boots and dig holes with the best of them.?ÿ
There is absolutely nothing wrong with obtaining a higher education.?ÿ Do what you want to do no matter what that education happened to involve.
About 30 years ago I stopped in at the local livestock feed store/mill one Saturday morning to shoot the breeze with the group I could tell were gathered there for basically the same reason.?ÿ A nice collection of old farm trucks and second hand vehicles along the street.?ÿ Inside there were four engineering graduates, two teachers with masters degrees, a West Point graduate turned DVM (veterinarian for the acronym challenged readers), a school principal with an Education Specialist degree, one graduate in Agricultural Education (vo-ag teacher) who could make more money as owner/operator of a fleet of semis and one young fellow with a degree in Economics.?ÿ Most of those present have been getting together for major holidays since they were kids or since they married into the family.?ÿ The DVM now is owner/operator of a business specializing in artificial breeding and cloning of premier livestock for customers across the North American continent.
