The results for the Professional Surveyor exam are in. My buddy called yesterday to tell me to check my e-mail from NCEES we both passed. Other than the loads of off the wall FEMA questions (which had nothing to do with Elev Certs [my only FEMA dealings]), I thought that the exam was pretty easy and had very little to do with actual surveying knowledge. Any other opinions/results on the exam
I was pleasantly surprised to receive my passing results yesterday too. Did you know they were sending them via email? I was expecting it to come through the USPS.
The exam was different than I was expecting and I found out real quick that the amount of time allowed was going to be the biggest issue. I didn't have time to check and make sure that my answer sheet matched my answers. I brought a bunch of references(like 10 books) and used maybe 3 of them...and then only for a few questions. I guess it's more of a "you know it or you don't" deal.
I don't recall a huge amount of FEMA questions. I was a mental-case on exam day so I don't remember much of anything from the test. At first, I had thought I bombed it but the more I thought about it, there were only a few that I really got hung up on.
All in all, it was quite any experience and I'm glad I will never have to take that test again. The wait period for the results was a killer. Now I just wait for the State results and hopefully have a good Christmas. Haha!
Congrats!!
Congratulations on a very hard earned accomplishment!!
I'll send you a koozie for your achievement if you send me your snail mail address.
Email me at: noodles @ harntech.com if ya want one.
Congrats!!
Sweet!
Thanks to you and Wendell for operating this site where I can talk about it. I think my wife is tired of me casually trying to bring up THE EXAM in conversation. She's happy for me but can only talk about it so much. 😛
Yes it was quite an experience, I was sitting in a room with nearly 350 engineers and 7 surveyors, taking an exam that could impact the direction of your life with 340 of the people flipping through manuals, coughing etc. (I used earplugs the entire test) At first you would almost have thought you were going to a college party as every engineering program in the southeast was represented from all of the college jerseys.
My buddy and I looked to be the youngest surveyors there at 29, several guys looked to be approaching 60+. I used Browns Legal Principals, Evidence and Procedures and the ACSM Surveying Definitions book mostly to check answers. Coming out of the morning session I felt that I had the test smoked. However the afternoon session brought out the FEMA questions for which I had no manual other than the ELEV CERT instructions.
I was kind of dissapointed in the lack of double and single proportionment/GLO questions being that I have that down pat. So yes I have to agree it was not what I was expecting.
I thought a generic e-mail was a little to casual, I wanted them to sent me a letter on parchment in a frame. J/K
Congrads. I remember when I took the NCEES test too. I thought I bombed. I passed, but I don't know by what score. Apparently that could be determinate to my self-esteem. LOL. Did you take a state specific exam too? Oklahoma was very heavy on the single, double proportions.
Nowadays You Are Lucky If The State Sends A Parchment
I had to request one for my Jersey PE rather than that 8 1/2 x 11 homemade job they first sent.

As far as I know, there were two surveyors and about a hundred+ engineers. You're not kidding about the life impact...this was pretty much a "must-pass" for me and my end goal after years of planning for it. Of course, all that pressure decided to come bearing down on me when they said BEGIN! A lot of people knew I was taking it and I have a lot riding on whether I pass or fail.
I thought I did worse on the morning session and better on the afternoon. There's nothing like looking at the first question of the test and thinking "oh $%T!". Then looking at the next one and thinking the same thing.
I also used Browns and the ACSM definitions but I also found the Wattles legal book useful too. All of the other fancy references and printouts sat unused but I did see where they would be useful if you weren't comfortable in a certain area. I used an unprogrammed HP35 and it did just fine. There weren't as many Calc questions as I was expecting but that thing worked great. I'd started using it for work about 1 year prior just so I'd be comfortable with it. I'm switching back to my HP48 now...I love that thing.
I agree about the email notification but if it increases the response time, I'll take it! A marching band and baton twirlers would've been nice because that's what I felt like seeing after clicking on that link.
Congratulations to you...sorry for the rambling but it's Saturday night and I'm having a few celebratory drinks!
Me too! Just checked the MS Board website. Havin a Makers Mark on ice to celebrate!
Congratulations to all of the successful examinees and a bright future to you all. If there are some among us that didnt fare to well or havent gotten their results dont despair......there is still April! (And now you know what to expect) I would add Blacks Law Dictionary to the list of references to have on hand.
Congratulations.
True story:
Joe and Ed (strangers to each other) met in the hallway after the PLS exam.
Joe ask Ed "how did you do on that exam?" Ed replied "I thought it was an insult to my intelligence". Joe responded "yeh, that is what I thought too................................ last year.!
:good:
Congrats guys!!!! :good:
Mmmm...Makers...I'm sippin' the Evan Williams, I don't have a raise yet. Haha!
Congratulations! so....what does s.w.a.g. mean anyway? I kind of thought it meant "Scientific Wild-Ass Guess". 😛
Congrats to you and the others who passed. The conclusion of one journey and the beginning of another.

Hahah well us wives only understand so much of your guys "Surveying" terminology... 😉
I was THRILLED when Wendell passed both his Oregon and Arizona tests..cause he got big raises!! I spent the $$!!! LOL!! J/K... I was thrilled and VERY proud of him because I remember how hard he worked and studied to get to that point for each test. He deserved and worked hard for his licenses, as all of you fellows do. 🙂
Congrats!!
Congrats from wet and cold Central Texas.
The best feeling in the world for sure.
Hard work and desire to excel for yourself and your family.
I have had the pleasure of opening 2 envelopes that proclaimed that I passed.
Janice called me at work to tell me that I passed the Texas test and my former boss shut down the office and we had a party the rest of the day. The field crews were even called in.
Good memories indeed.
Enjoy and never forget to check yourself.

I had already completed and passed the state history and law in July.

It does, it was my classes favorite saying when we were C++ programming in college.
