That's great advice. My next step is to track down a local surveyor who is willing to cart me around for a day or two.

You read my mind. We have some firms operating locally that perform environmental services as well as surveying and GIS. I like the idea of working in natural areas and on a variety of projects.
That's likely what I'll aim for, but I'm keeping an open mind given the economy.

You might want to check out surveying for the Bureau of Land Management. They have a couple three programs available in hiring students. Especially if you don't mind traveling to a different state.
