Anyone out there transfering data from/to a Leica RX1250 who does it without having to pull the data card out each time? Can it be done either with a chord or wireless? If so, I would like to know how you are doing it.
thanks in advance

Clearcut,
The RX1250 has always been able to connect to MS Window for download to avoid having to take out the CF Card from the battery compartment. The only thing you will need is either BT or cable connection. I suggest a cable connection to avoid any issues with BT depending on which BT device you are using and also what software is controlling the BT devices. I strongly suggest you register all of you Leica gear in the free service provided at
https://myworld.leica-geosystems.com
This is a free service and you will be able to download all the latest software, manuals, drivers, geoid files, etc. for you gear from this site. I can help you with this if needed if you email me.
The cable needed is:
Leica Art. No. 767899 GEV234, 1,65 m USB connection cable. (Lemo to USB A)1.)
For MS operating Systems:
1. Windows XP – you will need the GEV234, the latest USB drivers from Leica myWorld, and an installed copy of MS ActivSync software(All on myWorld Site)
2. Windows Vista or Windows 7 - you will need the GEV234, the latest USB drivers from Leica myWorld, and an installed copy of MS Mobile Device Center software (All on myWorld Site). You will also need firmware version 7.00 or higher installed on your RX1250 to use Windows 7
I can help step you through any connection issues if you email me and set up a time to walk through the problems. I hope this helps.
Thanks Mark.
I will be in contact as soon as I get finished with some field work. Much appreciated.

Download is free, is the upload to the gear also free?
Excerpt from a GPS1200 newsletter: New major software releases can only be loaded onto an instrument if the instrument has a valid software maintenance contract.

hello clearcut.
we pull the card, it's no big deal for us. you get pretty quick at it. i was aghast first time i realised i would have to open the battery door, drop the battery and eject the card. now it is a non issue.
having said that you have two other options. the usb cable, as mentioned, but also the 'field to office' functionality. as long as your device is connected to the internet, as ours is via a GPRS capable phone, you can upload from, and download to and FTP server.
i have had an FTP server set up on our work server, and it points to the upload and download directory on our server. so as long as you create an upload in the morning for the job you are doing then you can retrieve it at any stage no matter where you are even if you forget it. also you can download your jobs to the office before leaving the field for a quick check by office staff if you need. a completeness check on a topo, for example.
cheers.
Can anyone explain the difference between the GEV161 and the GEV234? Why was the GEV161 discontinued?
Thanks,

Will,
The GEV161 was made during the System1200 days and the GEV234 was released when Leica Viva was released. From my memory the only thing that was put out between the two cables is that the GEV234 was suppose to perform at a faster speed. To be honest I have never really notice the difference. However, when using the GEV234 cable I have not had to load any driver in Windows to use the GEV234. So, I think there is a "better" USB connection with the GEV234 in that Windows will recognize it as a generic device. Like I said... I have used both with the same PC running Windows 7 and I have not noticed any difference in the performance.
(Note:?ÿ The following applies to Windows 7.?ÿ It may work for Vista, XP, and 8 (maybe 10), but the details are likely to be different.?ÿ In particular, the Windows Explorer window is probably layed out differently.)
?ÿ
After switching my field laptop from an older Dell m4600 boat anchor (loved that machine) to a slimmer Dell m5510, running Win 7 Pro x64, I went to download my first datafile from my RX1250Tc to the m5510.?ÿ Plugged the GEV234 cable in and... nothing.?ÿ Then I remembered I had to install Windows Mobile Device Center, so I google'd it, downloaded the x64 version for Windows 7, and installed it.?ÿ Plugged in the GEV234 cable and... nothing.?ÿ So I went searching for a driver for 'GEV234'.?ÿ Save yourself the hassle, register your RX1250, if you haven't already on myWorld @ Leica Geoworld, and you can download the files:
- select myProducts
- select your RX1250 from the list of equipment (add it if its not there)
- click on the Tools tab
- scroll down to find your particular driver and click on the Download button on the far right
After saving the file, which is a zipfile, in Windows Explorer, find the downloaded zipfile, right click on it, and select Extract All... from the context menu.
After I did all this, I browsed down to the extracted zipfile, and I could not find a setup icon or anything.?ÿ After scratching my head for a while, trying to figure out how to install this driver, googling 'Windows 7 install GEV234 driver' brought me to my sense.?ÿ In general, when you are trying to install a driver for a piece of hardware, that hardware will show up in the Windows Device Manager with a yellow icon and an exclamation point next to it under Other Devices.?ÿ To see this or to get here, do the following:
- In a Windows Explorer window, browse to where you can see your computer's name in the preview pane on the left side of the Explorer window.?ÿ Right click on the computer name, and select Properties.?ÿ This should pop open a window "Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System".?ÿ
- In the upper left portion of this popup window, click on Device Manager
- In the Device Manager window, find and expand Other devices, if it is not already expanded.
- Right click on Rx Controller under Other devices, and select Update Driver Software... in the context menu
- In the Update Driver Software window that just opened, select Browse my computer for driver software, then click on the Browse button and browse to where you had unzipped the GEV234 driver file you had downloaded from Leica myWorld.?ÿ After finding and click on that location, click Next.?ÿ Windows should search that location and subfolders, find, and install the driver for the Rx Controller, which should now appear under Portable Devices in the Device Manager.
If you haven't done so already, download and install Windows Mobile Device Center (Windows 7 and above;?ÿ if Windows Vista or XP, I think you need something called ActiveSync;?ÿ all are available on Leica myWorld.)
Now with the RX1250 plugged into a USB port on your computer, when you run Windows Mobile Device Center, you should be able to click on
- Connect without setting up your Device
- then hover your mouse over File Management, and then select Browse the contents of your device
If this doesn't help anyone, that's fine.?ÿ I'll be able to search Google the next time I setup a computer and can't remember how to do this, and find my notes!
Hello @camptech,
Sorry to bother you on this old thread but I am in this dilemma right now, and I wonder if you could help. From my understanding, you were using WIN7 when you installed the drivers of the GEV234, so maybe that is why it worked.
I am using WIN10 as we speak and I have repetitively tried to install the GEV234 driver to no avail. Did you manage to migrate to WIN10 as well or are you still using WIN7 with your transfer cable?
