From about 1955 to about 1962 one of the big Westerns on TV was "Wyatt Earp" starring Hugh O'Brian. Most don't realize that he is still hanging around at age 91 and still working hard to help youth become leaders for the future. He invested his income wisely through the years and is very generous. There are several youth leadership academies organized under the label "HOBY" which stands for Hugh O'Brian and youth. Most states hold such an academy each year for recent high school sophomores. There is a national HOBY Advanced Leadership Academy held in Chicago each summer for recent high school juniors and seniors. Another is for youth from all over the world to come together. It all happens because of his spirit and generosity.

At our school board meeting last evening we were discussing providing $500 to assist one of our students to travel to the program in Chicago. I was the only person in the room other than the recommending principal who knew the name, Hugh O'Brian. I commented that it was amazing how the popularity of Wyatt Earp was still paying off. You would have thought I had just announced that Hillary and Bernie were going to marry each other. Everyone looked at me for an explanation. Most were amazed that popularity 60 years ago was contributing to helping today's youth.

Apparently I don't have a copy of my lovely lady posing next to Wyatt Earp's headstone to share with this post. Or the picture of her next to Wyatt's brother Virgil.

Information on Wyatt Earp and his family. His father was a farmer/lawyer. No wonder the Earp boys were cantankerous fellows. Connections in Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona.

For a laugh, check out this episode of the Andy Griffith Show where a Wild West Show comes to town featuring a scrawny little fellow who is supposed to be the greatnephew of Wyatt Earp. Goober gets his butt kicked.

A friend of mine has a copy of an old set of GLO field notes from a survey here in AZ with Wyatt's autograph. He was a surveyor too...

When Tombstone upgraded its board sidewalks to accommodate ADA ramps in 2000, I was laying out the curb stakes. This is in front of the OK Corral, bringing in control.

That vest probably wouldn't be the first choice of anyone planning to participate in a gunfight.
