I have an iphone 3GS. It does not have the hotspot option without beng plugged into the laptop. I currently have the smartphone package for it, along with the tethering option.
What I don't like is having to have itunes installed on the laptop to access the internet when in the field and away from the office. I don't use it alot, but it is one of those things that when you need it, you need it.
Does anyone know if there is a device that I can plug my iphone to that will be a hotspot similar to a mifi device? I have looked, and I think the current package I have would be cheaper than adding a mifi device.
I am happy with my phone, and don't really have the desire to upgrade anytime soon.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My iphone4 does what I think you want. Really, that's going to be the way to go.
I too have all that you describe on my 3GS.
But my personal hotspot (love that name) is available before I connect to my laptop.
No need for iTunes on the laptop either.
I think you need to track down a helpful customer service rep at 611 (att) from the phone.
It has been a couple years but I remember being on the phone with support and walla there was my personal hotspot setting available.
They have to flip some switch at their end.
I hope this helps. I like my 3GS too and do not want to "upgrade" either.
