The answer: It Depends!

This weekend I was replacing the cartridges in the kitchen sink to stop a drip and when I put it back together, the cold water didn't feel right. I checked the sink in the bathroom and both were the same. When my wife got home, I was informed that the cold water was wrong.

After some research, I found that if the faucet has a knob or a cross, both hot and cold are righty tighty lefty loosey. CCW on and CW off.

If the faucet has a handle that sticks out to the side, the hot is still the same but the cold is backwards. You always pull the handle towards you.

My kitchen sink has round knobs and the bathroom sink has handles.

I just couldn't resist passing that along.

In every house I've lived in since 1974 (5 of them) there has been a bathroom sink with the HOT and COLD reversed, not by my doing. Just a strange quinky-dink, I guess. When we first looked at the house we're in now, some twenty years ago, I had a strange feeling when I noticed the swap during my scrutinizing. I made a joke we would "probably pick this one" because of the switch....we did.

I doubt I'm going to get a chance to see another...unless it's the old folks home.

Researching after your wife has told you you're wrong.......brave man. Hopefully you fixed it then did your research. 😀

Here's what would happen if I tried DIY plumbing. It wouldn't though because SWMBO won't allow me in the house with tools. 🙁

The faucet should turn both ways, one for off and one for on. This is the easiest question of the day!

Funny, This weekend I FINALLY replaced the shower faucet cartridge in our upstairs shower. I've been hearing about it since we bought our house but I always shower downstairs so I never think about it. Anyway, my girlfriend text me a little while ago complaining that there was no hot water. Before I could reply she responded back that it was just backwards.

It must have been a good weekend for plumbing repairs.

Nope, still not fixed.

I'm gonna let her get used to it the way it is now and then change it back. It has more entertainment value. Us old folks have to get our kicks when and where we can. 😀

For some of the cartridges it's as easy as removing the handle and flipping the plate that controls the direction and amount of rotation allowed.

For this one, you just pull the cartridge and rotate it 180 degrees. We don't have a valve under the sink so turning the water off and on will take longer than fixing the faucet.

When I remodeled a few years ago, upgraded to ceramic valve faucets.
They have levers that point out and away from the water tube when off, hot left and cold right.
Point them at you and the water flows.
10yrs without a drip......
B-)

My wife doesn't like it, but our hot faucet in the kitchen turns the "wrong" way because when I put it together the right way it drips, even with new cartridge and seal. Something is wrong with the assembly but I'm too cheap to replace the whole thing.

Depends. North or south of the hemisphere!
Now, there is a round earth argument, that will keep you going round and round!
