I'm in the market for a laptop and mostly on the cheap. It will be mostly surfing and occasional document typing. I want one so that I can supervise my son while he's one the computer, etc.... I don't need to do ACAD or the like.
I've been seeing all of theses black friday deal and thought I'd snoop around and saw this on Dealnews.
Does it seem legit or are HPs to be avoided.
I was hoping to stay under $320.

I like HP, have several. The one "refurb" I bought died very quickly
"A 90-day warranty applies, but it's unclear who backs it." = No Warranty (you are on your own)
If you are just looking for cheap, search ebay or craigs list. Bought my daughter Thinkpad for about $100 a couple years ago and it still works fine.
as far as supervising your son, that is a software issue... ranging from reports to blocking.

I've owned several HP lappies and not one of them was a bad one. None of them would be considered high-end, they were all middle-of-the-road models. However, I've not owned an HP for a few years now, ever since purchasing an Asus a few years ago. That one was replaced a few months ago with a new Asus and I'm hooked.
I've heard good and bad stories about HP laptops, but mine were all good. Just know that anything in the $300 range isn't going to have anywhere near the capabilities of even a $800 laptop, but then again, it depends on what you plan to do with it. Probably the biggest difference would be the graphics card -- for $300, you'll likely get an integrated graphics card that lives off of the main RAM. So if it says it has 4GB of RAM, figure that the graphics card will want at least 1GB of that. Another difference will be the resolution of the monitor. For a 15.6" screen, you'd probably end up with 1366x768 resolution, which is something I simply cannot live with.
My current Asus laptop is 15.6" and has 8GB of RAM and 2GB of dedicated video RAM, with a 1920x1080 screen. But it wasn't cheap. I did get the deal of the century though, paying far, far less than the price now shown at Amazon 🙂
All that said, it's amazing what you can get for $300 these days. The power is all relative so again, it really depends on how you will use it.
Oh, I lied. I just remembered the one HP lappy that I had which came with a defective DVD drive. The warranty claim with HP was painless and literally only took a 5 minute phone call to resolve. They paid all shipping costs and OVERNIGHTED the new drive with explicit instructions on how to replace it. That was my second HP lappy and the main reason why I continued to purchase their products. But that was in 2000 or so, and probably isn't quite the same anymore.
I got 9 years out of a factory reman 17" hp laptop I bought from Ubid.
Still have the HD, using it as an external HD.
Screw the laptop, I would get a tablet in that price range for the uses you plan on using it for.

Had this discussion with my IT guy a couple weeks ago. Laptop Vs Tablet/ intended use, etc. His commpent on laptops was "stay way from anything that begins with "A".
His take based on what he was seeing from clients.
Youngest File Just picked up a Toshiba Satellite S955 from Costco for $699. Win 8
8Gb and 1TB.(IIRC)
An ipad3 together with one of these Zagg keyboard/cover and a $20 office app should do all that you want for around $600 total.
You should check out the Microsoft Surface as well.
I've had several HP laptops over the years. The one I have now is a Pavilion dv8. Kinda high end, right around $3,500, but I bought it for autocad and other applications. Been running fine for 4 years now. My Dell XPS began having issues, mainly from all the crap that has been down loaded on it. Still using it though, as the new(er) HP has windows 7 64bit and it doesn't like my old TDS software (survey link). I just bought SWMBO a iPad Mini 64 gb for xmas, that should fit your requirements (a bit spendy @ close to $600 w/ warrenty)but the 16 gb might be all you need.

Yeah, I got it for $600 but that's because I had some reward credits built up from Amazon (I buy lots of stuff from them, even some groceries and household goods). I think the actual purchase price would have been close to $800 without the credits.
One of the first things I do is either remove all the bloatware or do a clean install. Depends on the level of bloatware. The Asus wasn't too bad, compared to the HP's.
This 8 year old dv1000 (15") is 992 better than yours, I'm just sayin'.
