(We need a category for animals in surveying....)

Cow chewed my base wire today. The one from base radio, to base antennae.

Gotta cut a pc out, and sodder it. (I don't like soldiering!)

🙂

Aluminum wire does not sodder (solder) well. The outer cable in the coax cable is aluminum, and the inner is copper. So, my base radio now has a 3' cable, then a connection, to another 10' wire. Gads. Electric fence around teh base, if there is a hint of a cow.

Rascals.

Sorry Darrell, I did not get pics. Big help had set the electric fence up, but it was too close to the GPS.
And, I did not plug it in, because the wire was too close......

You get the pic. 1 mistake, leads to another, leads to cow chew wire.

My fault. We all took a lesson.

Wow, I am glad I am not the only one this has happened to. It happened to me several years back. Unfortunately, we were 2.5 hours (one way) away from any GPS distributor. It finally convinced my employer at the time to keep spares wires in the truck.

Had a similar thing happen to me years ago. A rodent or some small animal chewed off the outer covering on my base antenna cable for about 15'. Luckily didn't get into the wires inside so I didn't discover it untill the end of the day. I got a new cable and wrapped the old cable with black electricians tape to use as a spare.

I hope that little guy was constipated the next day!

Many years ago we had a cow walk off with the tripod and tri-brach after scratching herself. Try to explain that one to the boss.

For our GPS Network Maintenance Truck we carry a Weller butane-powered soldering iron. I thought it was so cool I bought one for home. Nifty gadget when you have to solder something and there's no 110V anywhere near. Don't know when I'll use it at home, but it's still a pretty cool tool. It's refillable with butane lighter fuel tanks stocked at most drug stores.

Moo.

Sounds like it would be handy to have around. Still have some low heat solder that a match will provide the heat source to solder, haven't used one in a long time, flux is probably bad by now. Think they were for patching a steel tape using clips and solder.

OMG I LOVE this pic!! Not sure why but I do. Maybe because the cow has that innocent look on it's face. I am going to put this pic in the gallery. 😀

Well, that sort of messes it up! (Chapter 2)

OK, so this happened on Monday.
Tuesday morn, I am repairing my wires, and don't really feel satisfied with the job until 11:00, on Tue. So, I send the kids fishing.
Here is Big Help's contribution to the supper table:

This is a 24 LB female, 5' long, longnose gar. (They are good to eat)
So, he gives me the fish, and says, "Dad, could you clean this, and put it on the smoker, so I can go back and get some more?" (What kind of dad could say no!) So, they went back, but did not do as good as the 1st time. But, dad blew off surveying, and went to help... We got a few, and I am sure at least several of these came from the kids. I got some too.
Fishing sure beats surveying!
