I was washing clothes today. Ran the first wash, and to the dryer. Put my sheets in the washer. It filled the tub, then nothing. DEAD! With a full tub of water! I plugged a lamp in the outlet. It's got power. Guess I need to dip the tub empty. Get the sheets out and go to the other house where there's a working washing to complete the sheets. But now I've got to figure out what steps to do next. I hate working on washing machines with a passion. I hate paying repairmen worse!
Any ideas where to start?

Keep another washtub and towels around. You NEVER can get ALL the water out of them until you pull that hose on the pump...;)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm betting it's the lid switch myself. Got most of the water dipped out. Watched a few youtube videos. It's a simple ohm test for the lid switch. Need to get the control panel off. That's when things went bad. Some have screws in the front. Not this one. Some pry up with a putty knife. Don't know? It never popped open. Some have screws in the back. In trying to move the washer out to access the rear I knocked a quarter size piece of hide off the top of my hand. That was all for last night. I'll do more research today. That is why I became a surveyor.

I think (but not sure) one can just disconnect the lid switch and it will work. No need to replace. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

You need to put a jumper wire connecter.
Dumb Azz me. Found the right video. There are to trim caps on the control panel that pop off, and the screws are under them. Simple now!
It's usually the door switch, the water level switch, the washer fill valve, or the washer's mechanical (hopefully if it's old enough) timer, in that order.
If you have a multimeter, its not too bad to trace and fix any of those problems.
Ebay is a great source for old parts as "urban mining" has become a thing lately. For me, a new timer online was $220, a guaranteed working used part on Ebay was 35 delivered.
What's the washer's brand and model #?

It's this one here. A Kenmore. If it's not the lid switch, we have a fairly new, hardly used Speed Queen at a house we don't live in. We'll just trash the Kenmore, and move the Speed Queen in.

Got the control panel off without inflecting further injury to myself. The truth be known, SWAMBO opened it up. Found the plug for the lid switch. Checked it with the multimeter, dead! Put a jumper cable in the plug, and the washer runs!! Ordered the part from Amazon. Should be here Friday. $13 shipped.
