Maker's Mark will not be cutting it's alcohol content from 90 to 84 proof.
The drop to 84 proof was an attempt to stretch their limited stock. It is probable that there may be a shortage in the near future so stock up now. Any increase in production today will not be seen for 6-7 years.
Personally I miss Michter's, which at the time of it's bankruptcy in 1989 was the oldest distillery in the USA. The Michter's name is still sold but it is not made in PA. Toured the plant with my father quite a few years back. It is credited with being the first to move from whiskey as an agricultural to industrual business. However as an industry it was just much too small to survive.

Some of us received our apology from Maker’s Mark by email over the weekend.
Dear Ambassador,
Since we announced our decision last week to reduce the alcohol content (ABV) of Maker’s Mark in response to supply constraints, we have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans. We’re humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker’s Mark. While we thought we were doing what’s right, this is your brand – and you told us in large numbers to change our decision.
You spoke. We listened. And we’re sincerely sorry we let you down.
So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker’s Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof). Just like we’ve made it since the very beginning.
The unanticipated dramatic growth rate of Maker’s Mark is a good problem to have, and we appreciate some of you telling us you’d even put up with occasional shortages. We promise we'll deal with them as best we can, as we work to expand capacity at the distillery.
Your trust, loyalty and passion are what’s most important. We realize we can’t lose sight of that. Thanks for your honesty and for reminding us what makes Maker’s Mark, and its fans, so special.
We’ll set about getting back to bottling the handcrafted bourbon that our father/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr. created. Same recipe. Same production process. Same product.
As always, we will continue to let you know first about developments at the distillery. In the meantime please keep telling us what’s on your mind and come down and visit us at the distillery. It means a lot to us.
Sincerely,
Rob Samuels
Chief Operating Officer,
What an absolute crock of shieet
They were trying to "profiteer", and nothing more.
This isn't some sort of life-saving serum that they have to "ensure", everyone can get . . . to live or something.
This is the same as a half-gallon of ice-cream ow being 1-1/2 quarts . . . profiteering by downsizing . . . nothing more.
They got caught with their proverbial pants down and were afraid the sales numbers might suffer more than the additional profits would absorb.
Let them all go to hheeeellll . . . straight to hheeeelll and don't collect $200.
AND THE PEOPLE . . . stupid consumers that eat all this shieettt right up.
Give them 50% less stuff in a box . . . call it "diet plan", packaging and the idiots go hog wild over the novelty and "convenience".
So this is nothing more than a company that wanted to jump on the profiteering band-wagon.
WANT TO MAKE A REAL STATEMENT . . . boycott their product.
and what a crackpot email . . .
basically telling everyone that everything they do is for the benefit of their customers . . .
You're all dupes and this email is more proof of how important companies find dedicated dupes to their enterprises.
THIS COMPANY WANTED TO DILUTE THEIR PRODUCT TO SELL MORE . . . simple mathematics.
I say buy another product . . . send them a message . . . this will send the whole industry a message . . . if you think it's important.
:-X :-@ :-S :-/ 😀 +o( |-) :pissed:
If John Boycotts, I Get His Bottle
I must be off my game, since I am not on any distillery or brewery email list.

and the "line" begins . . .
The loyal, dedicated, committed customer's line begins here . . .

I hear ya. I bought a bag of *air* the other day, but it did come with three bonus chips inside. 🙂

This is the point where your logic goes off the rails. 😉

I get a Christmas present every year from Maker's Mark too 😛
there's too many "booze" companies out there
to buy into this croack of carraapp . . .
But go ahead, believe what you will that they were only looking out for those poor customers who might not benefit from their elixir this coming year.
They need customers that they can hoogswallow into beleiving the empty-headed carapp they dish out.
It's not about profit . . . it's about our customers who "need", our product.
This carrapp about this email and the whole $%^%^%$#&$& story line about their almost philantropic(sp) attitude about their customers makes me sick to my stomach . . .
IT'S ABOUT PROFIT . . . IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT PROFIT . . .
PROFIT
PROFIT
PROFIT
PROFIT
PROFIT............
THEY WANT MORE PROFIT.........
And their customers are the succarsss that they will milk for this more profit . . . nothing more . . . nothing less . . .
I say buy ANYONE ELSE'S BOOSE AND LEAVE THIS CARRAAPP ON THE SHELF . . .
Ambassador?!? Seriously?
there's too many "booze" companies out there
>there's too many "booze" companies out there
Actually the list of wildly distributed mid-range bourbons that use wheat rather than rye as their secondary grain is pretty much limited to Maker’s.
Ambassador . . . absolutely . . .
Dear "poor working class stiff who wants to buy a "decadent", rich man's booze" . . .
Just doesn't have the same ring as
Dear "Ambassador",
Gosh gee Ollie . . . I bet they'll just eat this "Ambassador", shieet up...
K-Mart did the same thing in the late 60's by calling stockboys "Associates".
. . . It tastes like it's expensive . . . and it is . . .(or something like this)
wow, it makes does . . . make me feel really "special" . . . bull carraapp
Marketing . . . it really does work . . .

As an independent observer, it looks like they listened to their customers ad made a quick decision to avoid any problems.
I am sure that they recived jim's 40 pp reply with the 90 reasons not to change the product to their intial email and took it into consideration. 🙂
I do remember an old avatar here of Mr. Fleming
A good business learns . . .
what it can't get away with in the name of profit . . .
They "want" to get away with it . . . they can't.
I say punish them . . . boycott them . . .
let the rest of the industry "really", see how consumers feel . . .
there's too many "booze" companies out there
I'm sure there are enough buzz-drugs out there to find "something", that will whet your whistle and make you cry.........
A good business learns . . .
Why are you pushing this issue ?
They send an email out to their consumer base stating tha they are intending to change the product and they give the reasons why. In less than a week, they take the pulse of the replies and re-think the matter and that it might not be a good idea. I see no harm-no foul here.

I have a list of things that draw my “righteous indignation” and anything food or drink related is pretty far down the list.
there's too many "booze" companies out there
I agree with Fleming.....except for fast food places such as Micky D's and BK... I do have righteous indignation at them 🙂
