Your answer will always be 9 or some multiple...regardless of the number of digits.

So, 1,234,567

1+2+3+4+5+6=28

1234567 - 28 = 1234539

1234539 / 9 = 137171

9x3=27 2+7=9

Look at his table of symbols. All of the multiples of 9 have the same symbol. If you "try again", he rearranges the symbols. Multiples of 9 still have a common symbol, but it is different from your previous try.

Neat trick.
