Probably why I spent two years in the 9th grade....sigh

Each box is labelled with a statement, but only one of the statements is true. The boxes have the following statements:

'Box 1: The car is in this box.

Box 2: The car is not in this box.

Box 3: The car is not in box 1.'

Although it may not seem like it, this gives the reader just enough information to determine which box has the car in it.

And only 36 per cent of people on Brilliant's website have got the puzzle right, with the rest selecting the wrong answer.

So what's the correct answer?

The car is in box two!

You can work out the answer from a process of elimination. Only one of the statements on the boxes is true.

If the car was in box one, this would mean that the statements on box one and box two would be correct, so the answer can't be box one.

If the car was in box three, both the statements on box two and box three would be correct, so the answer can't be box three.

But, because the car is in box two, this means that only the statement on box three is correct.

It's a little mind blending, but logically eliminating the other boxes means you can work out the answer.

So did you get it right?

Well, I took a shortcut, and OPENED the boxes. Took pictures with my Javad, and shot that coordinate 3 times.
I can testify in court, I SAW THE CAR!

🙂

Yup. I worked it out before scrolling down, and used exactly the logic I then found below the puzzle.

Sorry about the double post guys. I'll blame it on the computers though it may have been my fault.

Anyway, I sent the above to my brother (PHD in physics). He said "it was easy" but refused to tell me the answer. It may be 42 though.

I would say surveyors are more likely to solve the problem because we have to analyze descrepancies as part of surveying. I also got the answer. I would think 50 percent or more of surveyors would get the answer right.

Um, none. I was referring to the internal camera.

Come on guys, there are no cars in boxes. 1. is a liar, 2 and 3 are truthful. I only see pictures of cars printed on the outside of all three boxes!
