I just played around with the Theodolite Beta app for Android and it's pretty cool. Just go to the Android Market and search for "theodolite". I'm sure it's something similar in the Apple store.

Here's some info about it: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-theodolite-zxwjw.aspx

I think I like it. Would like it much more if I could find some instructions.

Thanks Wendell! I'm not getting any results in the Market, but I'll keep checking for it.

I've used Living in the Sun in a pinch and Metal Detector (you'll have to search the market)has helped me find a vanishing rod.

Loves me a rooted Android.

well, its not an embedded application for a pocket phone, but imagine this product for terrestrial photogrammetry:

I bought the app for $4 and put it on my son's iPhone a while back.
My only comment: You need to wait a good while after snapping the photo button.
It is not instantaneous.
I learned that after composing a shot, pushing the camera button, then lowering the camera.
I have quite a few georeferenced pictures of my feet.
The app allows you to immediately send an e-mail with a Google Earth .kmz (.kml?) file.

Bryan,

yes, the app does seem to have slowed quite a bit with the latest incarnation. I've had it on my iphone for nearly a year, I think. as long as you make sure the button has turned red, it should be fine. I'm hoping they fix the speed issue soon. Also haven't figured out how to turn off the automatic prompt for a "comment" to be added..

I have it for the iphone and it's about useless. I used it a few times just playing with it, but it really is not worth the $5.

Help for Theodolite

Theodolite documentation

There are three 'flavours' for the app - free / basic / pro. The pro version is only four bucks. BTW, the developer explains why the image processing seeems to take a few seconds in the documentation.
