Well another weekend is upon us and I have a late report from a trip several weeks ago. A rather nice memory lane trip along Route 66, the Mother Road, from OKC to Tulsa (Tea Town) Oklahoma.
I've heard they had a rather nice sea aquarium but had never ventured to it so this was my first trip.
Pretty nice digs from the outside and a large park surrounds it on the south side of Tulsa. (Bring quarters as a toll road leads you to it). Okie, the land of the tolls. Sad, but true.
I got to pet sharks, sting rays, sea cucumbers and all sorts of sea animals. The sting rays seemed to just love it. Surprised me.
The coolest thing though was the shark tunnel. Not sure what's its really called but you walk down and they swim next to you and overhead. Very cool.
Very cool visit but time to move on with the trip back down Route 66. A stop at a place I had never seen since they had only opened a year or so ago. The Warwick, Ok Seaba Station. An old gas station converted into a bike museum. But not just any museum. The did not concentrate on Harley's or Indians but had a wide variety of bikes.
I think this one actually might have been my first bike. At least the old Cushman sure looks the same.
Probably a few on this board have scraped the sideboards on one of these. Loved mine back in the day.
So I moved on and found another jem that I had road on back in the day. A restored Honda Dream. I called mine the Dreamcycle. Pure power for the day and could hit nearly 70 mph.
And I just loved this old hill climb bike. Totally nice.
And this wicker rendition of a bike. Wow! Some real work and design went into that one.
Tons more but I must move on. So down the road we go and a stop at the Rock Cafe. Built from rock that was pulled out during the building of Route 66. It's burned down once but has made a comeback. Big old burgers, fries and smiling faces greeted us.
They had a war veterans park just next as I arrived and I spent some time just sitting after my meal. As did many others along the route.
Rolling on again and stopped to catch a photo of this place in Chandler, Ok. I didn't go in on this trip but it's on my list of next times. Huge neon sign that must have cost an arm and a leg back in the day.
About time to go out now and find another adventure. Or maybe just stop by my friends and do some chilling.
Lawton over and out.
Thanks Deral,I always like your blog, sincerely.
Now some friendly ribbing....
I am thinking you could get the wicker one and paint it mauve or pink 😉
I know, I know,.....it looks different in person, a color scheme from the 1860's when pink was more manly....
The Rock Cafe burned down?
yeah I was wondering the same thing LOL.
Is it carved out of a giant rock or a giant rock that got made into smaller rocks?
Well, the outside was made of rock but not all the rest. I think the walls stayed up but not the insides. Don't really know all the story though.
Just messin' with ya. Nice pics.
That shark above you makes it look like you are actually in the water with him! Good pic!! 🙂
One of these days I want to drive the entire Route 66. I've been all over it in California and Arizona, but would be nice to follow it the rest of the way. One of my favorite stops on Route 66 is Oatman, Az.

Good blog Deral...aquariums in Okie still blows me away. I too used to hangout on Hwy 66 but like Angel over in Kingman and Oatman Arizona
Great stuff.....thanks!
NEWS ALERT!!!!
There are a bunch of motorcycle fans from Australia and New Zealand currently traveling Old Route 66. They were around Joplin, MO a couple of days ago. A forget precisely how many in the group, but, I'm thinking somewhere around 50.

You traveled that whole road, Don?? Do tell us some stories!!! 🙂
http://www.theroadwanderer.net/RT66oatman.htm was interesting. I like the old pics of Oatman!! But I like old westerny looking towns.
I took my BFF up to Oatman when we had our "girls weekend away" in nearby Laughlin. She had never seen burros up close before. There was one that kept following me around, even inside into the stores!! Azul was her name because her eyes were beautiful baby blue colored. I felt so sorry for her....over 100º out and there she was, clomping away by me in that heat. She followed me through that entire town!! I went back a few years later to find Azul and feed her another carrot or two but the shop keeper said she had passed on.
I'll post a couple of pics of Azul for ya.
Yea, definitely "Arizona Girls" here...who else in their right mind would be out in 100º+ heat feeding burros?!! :-$
Azuls baby burro is right behind her. I think her name was "Azulita".
NEWS ALERT!!!!
The generally travel east to west on the route and usually have guide either along with them or with them each night. There are several places in Australia and other countries that specialize in setting up these rides.
Here is just one.
Australian Tour of Historic Route 66
I've got a couple of guide books for those traveling it from coast to coast. It's not all the well marked in many places.

"You traveled that whole road, Don?? Do tell us some stories!!! "
Not the whole road, Angel, only various portions at various times. Most stories could be summed up as: "Young wannabe beatnik hitchhiker heads west and/or east seeking adventure and romance. Finds adventure." Later: "Young honest-to-god hippie wanderer travels east and/or west seeking drugs and romance. Finds drugs."
🙂
