Yes sometimes a late long day that turns into a late evening chores just can’t get any better.

I enjoy seeing deer almost every day. We didn't always live where that was possible. However, I did not enjoy the early morning encounter that my car had with one last week. Fifteen years here and this was the first insurance claim for deer damage. Years ago I learned to drive 40 mph in certain areas because it's kind of like running the gauntlet sometimes. I still enjoy seeing them in the daylight though.

Yeah nice and cool last night. Trying my best to get caught up. As of now I have 2 chiefs down from surgery and we have field work that has to be done so I will be heading out of town to try and keep us on schedule. So some long dats on farm this weekend.

They do appear to be pretty until you see them snapping off the individual plants that form your cash crop.  Each bite represents lost income.  A thousand bites in one day by a collection of those critters changes them into long legged rats destroying your crop.

We had none in this area when I was a boy.  We need to return to that status as soon as possible.

@holy-cow Yeah cash crops they can devastate quickly for sure. A few years back I planted a good crop of sweet corn. And there is one sure way of knowing when that sweet corn is at its peak. Thats when that smaller masked bandit shows up lol. I had come home about 630 am from night shift and he was grinning at me. I came in and helped get kids off to school and then it was me or him lol. I finally got that joker. I will probably put up some venison this year as the population has grown a bit for sure.

When you look from the road and see 15 or more in an 8-acre field and another 20 or more in an 11-acre field of young soybeans they are not the least bit cute.  Every bite kills one or more soybean plant.  They have plenty of grass, etc. to eat but the soybean plants are like candy bars to them.

@holy-cow so true. A fellow has beans planted across from where I run cows.  Its a 7 acre triangle piece. He asked if he could drill some beans in my pasture so just maybe the deer would not eat him out of his profits. I told him next spring plant a few pounds per acre i don’t think the cows will mind lol. I put out extra salt blocks mineral blocks and sewed a bunch of annuals in a field i am about to re do for pasture and man deer heaven.

Right now i am trying to get my pasture around the house in order. Getting ready to buy one of those 4 legged money eating critters for my daughter. She is about to be 9 and is joining the equestrian 4 h club so my brother has a 8 year old mare from a ranch in Colorado he has about ready for her. Tearing down old fence and an old paddock plus filling in all the old post holes. Re arranging the implements so i can build her a small round pen to learn how to work the horse on the ground. It’s so hot and such a late night mowing i am pooped today. Moving tractor tomorrow to another place so i can mow and do some cleaning up of brush and trees that fell and get it all placed in the gullies and washes. Always something to do. Keeps me out of trouble.
