As some may recall, abut a month ago I proposed a get together for our upcoming trip to Seattle. Our travel plans have been set since then and I was getting travel plans from my family so as not to interfere with their plans. So here goes:

We are arriving on Oct 5th, with most everybody else arriving on the 5th or 6th. The "Big Event" (I really nver thought it would happen) is on the 7th. The bulk of the travelling family will be leaving on the 9th, with one or two hanging on till the 10th. Me and the missus however have decided to make it a real vacation and will be staying until the 18th. The only specific plans that we have are a trip to Eugene for one night and I'm thinking maybe 11th, 12th or 13th. The only other things that we are thinking of are:
Of course, a trip to the Space Needle and hopefully a meal there.
Not sure at this time about a day trip, if possible, to Vancouver, BC.
The Air & Space Museum (or whatever it's called).
Mt. Rainier or St. Helen's
Any suggested places would also be greatly appreciated.

That gives us quite a few days to plan something, anywhere in Seattle, Portland or points in between would be OK with me and maybe shooting for the 14th or 15th might be best so as not to affect anyone's work schedule.

Thoughts?

By the way, we recieved some good news, in a roundabout way. The USS Regan has been out to sea since February for a six month deployment in the 5th Fleet Area of operations (Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden ...). Last week they poseted on their Facebook Page that they had docked in Hong Kong for four days and on the 22nd in Guam for two days. It appears that they will be back in San Diego in early September at the latest and at some point will b restationed in Bremerton, WA. This means that it looks as though our son will at least be able to be there for his sister's big day.:good: 🙂

Being a Buckeye from Ohio I don't have all of the info you are looking for but I have taken the family out to Seattle a few times on vacation. Hopefully some of the locals here will have more info for you.

If you are staying in the downtown area (we stayed at the Sheraton), you may be able to walk a block or two to get on the Monorail which is still there dating from the 1960 World's Fair. It will take you right out to the Space Needle in just a few minutes. My recommendation would be to get out there early for breakfast. You will be paying just for the ride to the top if that is all you want but that is included with "breakfast" so try to get in line for the meal. The food is good and the view, while you rotate once per hour, is spectacular.

Mount Rainier is great but also consider a loop tour of the Olympic Peninsula including Olympic National Park.

Rich,
I actually put it on my calendar when you mentioned it last. The first part of October I'll be out in the woods chasing my deer but hopefully that will be over with quickly.

The Pacific NW has so much to offer its hard to pick a list of "must see's" or "must do's" Best to compile a list and check off what suits your fancy at the time and fits in the schedule. Space needle is great, pikes market is fun and touristy. Vancouver BC is by far one of my most favorite cities ever but it may be more than just a day trip. You can spend all day walking the city from corridor, to corridor. I'll let someone else go more in depth on the Puget Sound area since thats not my back yard.

ANY of the mountain volcanos down the Cascade range are spectacular. If the days are remotely clear which some of them should be in OCT, you will be hard pressed to see less than two or three peaks at any given moment. Rainier is of course the biggest, but St Helens has some nice day hikes. Mt Hood is special in that you can drive to Timberline lodge and ride up the ski lift if you want a great view and experience. That's just a short jont outside of Portland. The Columbia river gorge offers breathtaking views of the river and has some amazing viewpoints and waterfalls that are also really close to Portland. Since you a surveyor and cruising through portland I can only highly recommend you swing by the Willamette stone Initial Point. Thats less than 10 minutes from downtown portland and involves a quick little hike. There are also some great views of the city from the road to get there.

If your up for some great vino and or micro brewed beers, there is no greater selection of either in any one place. Cheers, More later.

Look me up when you get to town! I had a great time when Grant and Kathy Brady were here. Wish I could've made it to Portland when they were down there...

Cheers,

Dugger

Let's get something going!!! Wendell and I would love to be a part of it whether we have to go up to Seattle or we do it in Portland, etc... Let's figure it out and I will mark it on our calendar. 🙂

RU guys serious about coming up to Seattle?!

Maybe Portland would be better. I think if we have something cool to do, a lot of people might show up. That's why Portland might be better, we could go see the Willamette Stone. I've surveyed in Portland and know of some cool places.

I would suggest that we meet someplace for brunch or VooDoo Doughnuts, spend the rest day doing cool stuff and finish with a meal at a place the serves beer....

I'm open to other suggestions as well, Seattle does have a lot of cool things to see too and there are lots of places in between.

We do have a few more weeks to decide, but we shouldn't wait until the last minute.

Doug Casement, PLS
