What kind of left brain/right brain talent exists in the world of surveying?
A friend of mine in NC is a land surveyor and also plays in a band (sax, keyboard and vocals).
Even though it's not left and right brain, I'd give Wendell half a credit for being such a great web-designer and a surveyor.
I also had a phone conversation with another post-er from Beerleg yesterday (I'll keep it anonymous unless he wants to 'fess up) who was an English major and had a background in political science. That conversation prompted me to post this.
I used to work with a man who was a cad operator/preacher/auctioneer/carnival "sand art" salesman; but, he wasn't a surveyor so it doesn't count.
What's the oddest combination you can think of?

Well, his art work would qualify him.
I'm new around here... didn't know he was an artist. Sorry for not giving the proper credit 🙂
I can rub my stomach with one hand and pat my head with the other at the same time. That takes real talent. However, probably not what you are looking for.
I don't think this guy ever pursued surveying for real, but I know he went out in the field with LarryP and his brother a couple of times to get a feel for it. He was Dale Jr.'s private pilot when Jr. was at DEI in the #8 Budweiser car.
Wendell loves to draw. He's drawn several monickers here like Deral's and his own. He'll draw you one if you send him a pic.
There are many musicians here of all types. Clearly a right-brain activity. However I doubt John Wesley Powell didn't make much for a fiddle player. 😉
As to any preacher types.... well I can name only one single surveyor I've known who never cussed and never had an ill word towards anyone. The 2 female surveyors I've worked with could easily carry their weight in foul-mouthness and make a sailor blush. :-X
As to me, nothing much. Former Tai Chi master - but that was a long time ago.

Oh yea...he's quite the artist indeed!! Here's some of his black and whites that relate to surveying. If you go back to the rat/avatar thread there's cartoons in there that he hand drew. He's a genius!! And I'm not just saying that cause I'm married to him. LOL OKI am but I speaketh the truth. 😉

I just tried doing this and it is harder than I thought it would be. :-O So it IS a talent of some sort. 🙂
I just tried it and I can rub my stomach with one hand and pat my head with the other at the same time and then I can switch and pat my stomach with one hand and rub my head with the other at the same time. I’ll bet Dave can, too, if he tries.
If you accept the common left brain – right brain narrative:
Left Brain
Logical
Sequential
Rational
Analytical
Objective
Looks at parts
Right Brain
Random
Intuitive
Holistic
Synthesizing
Subjective
Looks at wholes
I think you have to conclude the ideal land surveyor would possess an even balance between left brain – right brain. Some aspects of land surveying require a rational, analytical, objective approach. Others require an intuitive, subjective approach. Too much right brain and you get the "close enough for government work" attitude. Too much left brain and you get pin cushions.
Well, I'm primarily a software engineer, but I also almost have my PLS, although I majored in Physics and Biology in college, and have worked for NASA.
In addition, I play a dozen or so musical instruments, and play guitar "professionally" in a local band (well, at least, we get paid sometimes), am an amateur photographer, and the last time I was there, some of my artwork was still on the walls of my old college (eight years after I left).
Don't know if that constitutes an "odd combination" or not, though... 🙂
hey sinc
"software engineer"... that's not a term I hear here unless from myself.
What sort of stuff do you do?
These days I'm 100% C# .NET.
I started back in early 80 with ancient BASIC loaded from cassette tape and some 8080 assembly.
I used to "speak" a couple dozen languages including the 4 compilers I wrote.
Doing anything cool?
Need some help?

don't forget Angel
He used to do cartoons for the POB print mag years ago.
My mother cannot walk and chew gum at the same time, so genetically,
I'm screwed.

Wendell is quite the artist. Those are pretty cool...I'll assume pen and ink.

Yea he still has those originals here but we can't publish them on here cause of a copyright thing or something. Same with the Christmas Cards he did for POB. I dunno the exact details but he does. 🙂
don't forget Angel
Cause he signed over the rights.
His only pleasure now is that "Harness" shows up in the bottom right hand corner which gives him exposure. Don't know for sure but I'd bet I'm not far off.

Yea he did them in pencil first then traced over I believe in this black "artist" pen. 🙂

Definitely talented. I don't have an artistic bone in my body. It's just a good thing CAD came around when it did, I couldn't have made a living working on a drafting table. Those who have both the technical and musical/artistic ability impress the heck out of me.

RPLS Cookbook
I have full rights to the cartoons published in POB. As for the POB Christmas cards I drew, I signed away rights to that artwork for use as greeting cards ONLY. I have all rights to them otherwise.
The pen and ink drawings above were created for the RPLS Cookbook, which I think you can still buy at Larry P's website. Those were donated as well, but no specific rights given away.
My favorite has always been the sandwich:
Thanks for all the really nice comments. 🙂

Me either Jennifer! I can't even draw a stick figure. :-/ Wendell on the other hand...whenever we play a game with drawing in it everyone wants HIM on their team and not me. LOL!! Some friends I got!! 😛
