> You can learn a lot on your ranch, maybe all you need to know, actually; or on your farm, or in your little town with Floyd the barber. That's true, but it seems that critical experience may be missing if you've never seen and listened to people with dramatically different lifestyles, attitudes, outlooks, backgrounds, colors, values, ambitions and approaches to happiness.
Perhaps I am just not of a philosophical frame of mind this mid-morning, but that seems a bit trite. Do you suppose ranches, farms, and small towns are composed of genetic replicas based on a single Bubba DNA sequence?
One of my favorite versions of it:
From another old philosopher, of sorts....
Every time when I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way
Everybody's got the dues in life to pay
I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody sin
You got to lose to know how to win
Half my life
Is books written pages
Live and learn from fools and
From sages
You know it's true, oh
All these things you do come back to you
Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear
Sing with me, just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

That is an excellent performance, agreed.
BTW, I did not, and would not, disregard small towns, farms or ranches as a source of all that is necessary for a meaningful and enlightened existence. Maybe those environments are, in fact, more conducive to self- realization. I believe that if you find yourself in idyllic circumstances, it's because you deserve it, and those situations can be, not always, but can be idyllic. If they're not, it's your own fault, Bubba:-)
No, seriously, I just think it's good to get out and experience other cultures even if it's just for entertainment.

No big deal Don, I just find the idea of the homogenized white bread small town to be over used. Surprisingly enough, in my small town of about 2000, we actually have several cultures represented - even to the point of having a pretty decent Indian cuisine restaurant. Art displays at the museum have actually represented differing cultures from local artists.
As an aside, Bubba is actually my cousin (not kidding!!).
