Just curious if hunter safety courses are required in Iowa? Was Dick Cheney in town?

Safety course is required to get a hunting license in Iowa if you were born after Jan 1, 1972. I don't know how good the courses are.

Long time ago while deer hunting in Northwest Louisiana I watched as a bullet parted the grass as it went inbetween my legs. Haven't hunted deer in Louisiana since.

That was in 1966 at the Red Dirt Game Management Area in Natchitoches Parish.

The five hunters were hit by shotgun blasts. None of the injuries was life-threatening, officials said.

“One of the things that's different about shotgun season, it's a group or a party of hunters driving deer toward other shooters. There's a potential for crossfire in those circumstances,” agency spokesman Kevin Baskins said.

And there lies the problem.

Another huge problem is that few today grew up with firearms, many are afraid of them and most seem to already know it all and will not listen. Then there is buck fever which causes an inability to see anything but what you think is game, no seeing between or beyond.

Don't know what you ask, but I listen, do some thinking and reach my own conclusions. What I normally consider first is cause and effect, working alone so many years on the ranch demanded considering those things before doing anything, without doing so survival with all appendages intact is rare.

Merlin

We've done those for YEARS (since I was a little boy) and that was never a concern. We always knew where each of us where and we NEVER shot to our right or left, only front or back. The guy hunting the line we were driving them to only shot to your right or left.

A little planning goes a long way and really ups your odds for getting a deer. Deer drives are a blast!

Drives do work, but the drivers and the shooters must stick to the plan and stay alert as to where everyone is. Most I would not hunt with.

I believe that hunting is far safer than it was 50 years ago.

Yes, if your State has mandatory wearing of blaze orange. Deer drives are illegal in Maine.
