Thanks Jim,
I was hoping to find something up to a half marathon but so far not having much luck. I did find a trail marathon from Lake Wanaka to Arrowtown which I may sign up for. I'm sure there are numerous community runs that aren't very well advertised. We will be on the South Island from Feb.27 to March 18.

I'm pretty sure that Wanaka to Arrowtown runs up the Mototapu and down the Arrow rivers. Absolutely brilliant scenery - it would be well worth doing

Hear that the natives on North Island could really make the Englishmen trot right along in the old days. Do they still help getting runners motivated?

That's why I am considering doing it. I said I wasn't going to run anymore marathons but that is a great way to see the scenery. On something like that I usually carry one of those single use camera's just so I don't waste any photo opportunities. The last 12k or so looks kind of brutal coming off the summit down to Arrowtown.

A friend of mine claims he was picked up by the Prime Minister of NZ while hitchhiking around the country.

Here's some photos from South Island. This scenery is everywhere you turn. What a beautiful country. The people are extremely friendly. Second photo is one lane bridge for cars below and trains above. Very cool! Last two photos taken in Arrowtown. Yes, that's snow in October, downunder!
