I've been retired for 15 years now. Hard to believe.?ÿ I didn't set goals.?ÿ I haven't worked at any particular thing, just whatever got my attention. ?ÿ I could even have become a licensed surveyor and practiced for a while if that had been the goal, instead of just a kibitzer on forums.?ÿ I've accomplished a few little things, helping the non-profit music venue operate, GPSonBM, helping at church, etc., but in a larger sense, I've wasted most of that time. At my funeral, there won't be leaders of the community mourning my passing.
Time flies and you don't notice it if you don't have enough goals.?ÿ So decide if catching a few fish is your goal or something larger.
Retired 5 years ago at 65.?ÿ Wasn't planning on it, but at my annual meeting with my investments advisor he told me I could retire and have more disposable income?ÿ than If I continued to work full time.?ÿ I was surprised but with SS, free gold plated medical/dental benefits & a pension, no more work expenses (commute, union dues, SS & pension contributions, etc.) it did pencil out.
Since then I've been having a ball, travelling in my Jeep throughout the West for 6 months a year?ÿ with plans for extended international travel last year using $4,000 worth of rapid rewards airline points. COVID prevented that and it's coming up on one year where I've been sheltering in place with trips only for gas, food, the Post Office & medical appts, infuriatingly boring.
I "retired" and sold all interest to my company at age 65.?ÿ Five years later I'm still taking care of a couple of clients with work that I consider "fun stuff".?ÿ I work maybe two mornings a week in the field and spend those afternoons producing exhibits in my cave.?ÿ I can fish or piddle when I want, there's no big pressure.?ÿ If we want to pack up and go see some sights it's no problem.
I will probably put it all down in a few years, but I still love getting out and digging up corners.?ÿ And besides, I can't think of anything else I could be doing that nets so much money for such little effort.?ÿ
No need to walk away while the money is flowing.?ÿ 😉
@bruce-small I retired about 3 years ago. I lasted for two years and then bought GNSS a robot and at 72 have reinvented myself as a ??solo? operation. I have to admit that reading your posts here over the years was a part of my inspiration to get back to it.
interesting thread, I've been thinking of upgrading to a robotic but "at my age" (66 in June) wondering if I should. ?ÿ
