Can anyone reccomend some (preferably) freeware to control a PC over a Local Area Network?

I have an extra PC I want to set up as another file server and would prefer not to have all the periphreals attached.

I am using XP SP3 on all machines.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I've been using the free version of LogMeIn for a few years now, and I like it. There are some restrictions to the free version, but I don't use it enough to care. The restrictions might bother someone that uses it regularly.

If all you want to do is use it to store stuff on, you don't need anything else with XP/SP3. You can set up the shared documents on the "server" to be accessed from any other computer on the network. That's what we do. And we put 2 HD's on our "server" and can access both of them from any computer. What you can not do with this set-up is actually control programs.

UltraVNC is what I use.
or any of the VNC family will do.

There are programs in windows to do what you want if I am understanding you correctly.

Remote desktop gives you complete control over a computer you set up for it.

If it's just files you want to access, set up a home network, set up your other computer to allow access to the folders you need to access and you can get to anything in the other computer, but you won't have control over it like remote desktop.

I had three computers on remote desktop at one time. I could use any of them from my laptop.

You just need a network and setup printer sharing and the like.

You probably already have Windows Remote Desktop installed - check that out.

Otherwise I'll second the vote for UltraVNC

Another thought, maybe not applicable, is to try DropBox. It's a place where you can store files to be shared with other computers. It's pretty slick.
