I wonder if someone confused pink surveyor's flagging/ribbon with string?

that's my guess..but Forestry Suppliers' only sells it with white string. I guess someone found some 'pank' string somewhere.

The hardware stores sell pink and other colors "mason's line". That would be used by many people besides surveyors, and sounds more likely than anything else.
It's only in nylon these days, but sometimes I'd rather have cotton.
