I know this is minor, but it makes me nuts:
A CLIP and a MAGAZINE are not the same thing. A CLIP is a small metal strip that holds cartridges in a group, usually to be inserted into a MAGAZINE. If you are going to have the discussion, let's use the correct term.
It always reminds of the guy who (trying to sound like he knows what he's talking about) says "Could you run down here with your TRANSOM and mark my lot lines"? He instantly marks himself as someone with slight knowledge.
Lemme get ma plak, and come on down wid me transom, and axe ye a few more questions, and we will get dem lines run b'for noon!

I agree with JB, I have even noticed this on T.V. Cop shows. Hay I'm out of ammo I need an other clip!
I saw that clip, and read about a transom in my sailing magazine.
I understand it's a pet peeve. I understand the difference between them. Colloquial use however, allows for them to be used interchangeably.
I use them both. I also understand that a kitty dies every time clip is used in lieu of magazine.
ORIENTATE is another one.
hey JB how is winter storm 2011 treating you? we are still fighting out down here. lots of ice now from melted snow. i am ready for spring!
Sucks here. The roads are fairly clear, except in the neighborhoods. The problem is that everything is freezing at night, making for a difficult drive in the morning. We usually don't have snow/ice lasting around like this. Not much work this time of year anyway. My Black Ops skills are improving daily!
Stripper clips, they come in a cloth bandolier for loading into you magazines 5 rounds to each clip, four clips to a magazine. M14 Era - I am sure other weapons have similar systems.

Tom, stripper clips were used for most bolt action military rifles for years and also modified clips were made to load magazines while in the rifle, like the M-14 stripper clips, I used them while with ACB-1 but don't with my M1-A. The M-1 used a 8 round clip placed in the magazine well from the top which was tossed out after the last round was fired, made a ring during the flight out, those clips caused many M-1 thumbs for those not familiar with the weapon.

I use stripper clips every time I load my SKS or the mags for my AR-15. The difference is loading the mags needs the "spoon" to hold the clip while the sks has the "spoon" built in to the receiver and just needs the full clip. 10 rounds at a time.

The M-14 mags can also be loaded in the rifle or out. Not familiar with SKS. I believe I can get stripper clips for my Mini-14 also, maybe the clips for the M-16 would work on the magazines, don't know. I have a few of stripper clips that can be used in my Springfield 03-A3's, also my 1917's.

The SKS is just like the Mausers, with a slot on the face of the bolt, but they hold ten rounds.
The bolt stays open on the last round, so that you can slide the next clip in place and load.
Once loaded you pull back on the bolt again and it will slide forward and chamber the next round.
The SKS is a really impressive weapon that is easy to care for, which is nice if you shoot a lot of the Russian rounds.
maybe I'm not up on the current lingo, or maybe it's a regional thing, but the guy I always used to hunt with had a 30-06 with a clip (what you call a magazine).
How many of us refer to a "gun" without going into the specifics of transit versus total station?
99% of Surveyors have no problem with that.
"Clip" is the same damn thing. In general use, we all know damn well that it just means the mechanism that puts a bunch of bullets in a line to easily load and fire them.
99% of gun owners have no problem with that.
Unless you are getting into specific technical details, it is understood, just like "gun" is.
There's far more egregious violations of language all around us, like saying "A Map Entitled 'Survey of Lands of..."
