Saw this on BBC this AM, pretty cool, thought I'd share.

That's the sort of job I would not volunteer to join. That is why I have great admiration who were willing to pay the price involved.

My wife once asked me if I would volunteer for a space ship to colonize a new planet. Then she looked at me and said don't even answer, I know what you would do.

My answer was: "In a heartbeat".
Imagine being the VERY FIRST SURVEYOR on the ground on a brand new planet. Yipeee.
Even at my age now I would still do it.

Just remember, no GNSS there, you have no idea where a compass will point, and if it's not in our solar system you have to start from scratch figuring out time and which stars are at what azimuths and what latitude you are at.

After you spend a few local-planet years on that you can invent your version of a PLSS or non-PLSS cadastral scheme.

I recognize a couple of the locations. How things have changed and yet remain the same. I've often been amazed by the work of the pioneering surveyors who worked here long before the paved highways and GNSS came along. They were the real deal. Thanks for sharing.

Don't need that long. I can find the magnetic poles without a compass. once those are established I have a baseline against which to check the stars and establish the planetary poles. I can pick which one I want to call north or south. From there away I go.

REMEMBER, I am First so I am ALWAYS RIGHT.
