Good Day,

So here's the story. I'm getting married this year, October 11th. SWMBO and I are not the beach type and are more outdoors people and have decided to do a New England State tour. We are from Central PA and plan to drive straight from here all around for some week or two. We also plan on bringing our bikes and kayaks. We will do this following the wedding so the time frame is post October 11th.

What are good visits for that time of year? What's a good tour of everything North of PA. I know we aren't going to be able to see everything that there is to see but I would like some sort of direction and make it easier to plan.

Any help would be great, thanks!

If you're outdoors people as you have said I'd recommend the following:

Massachusetts: Berkshires in the fall are beautiful. Mt Greylock (Highest Mt in Mass) is about a two hour hike to the top for a good day trip. Also Shelburne Falls, another one of my favorite spots.

New Hampshire: White Mountains, Presidential Range, more great hiking (and biking if you like hills) than I can write about.

Maine: Mt Desert Island, Acadia National park. Not to be missed. If you have sea kayaks, this is the place to go, however, in October you might be pushing the season.

Vermont: Green mountains, also great hiking. Lake Champlain is a nice area.

Rhode Island: Newport is where most people will tell you to go. I like Jamestown Island, but you said you're not beach people.

Connecticut: Ummm...? Well, just drive through it. 😉

Despite what my neighbor to the north says...

CT is the place to be...Stop in New Haven, and have some of the best pizza on the planet.

For biking trails check this guide out. Biking Trails in CT

You can Kayak in Long Island Sound, or down the Connecticut River. Kayaking In CT

Great B&B's in northwest CT.

Visit a few breweries in CT. Two Roads Brewery is my favorite

Here is a more complete list. CT beer Trail

Skip Massachusetts...just a bunch of smelly Red Sox fans anyway o.O 😉

I would imagine you could find some hookup to the Appalachian Trail (The AT) somewhere thereabouts. Just find a place to park and hike 5 miles out and back. That should get the hiking out of you. I only know about the AT in N. GA and western NC. In NC there were plenty of places not far from where we lived to hook up to it. Carver's Gap near Rone mountain was our usual spot. Up on Carver's Gap we could see the ski resorts over in Banner Elk. LarryP might could you a distance but it was clearly well over a few miles. On a clear day it was easily visible. On a foggy day you couldn't see 50 yards in front of you.
Congratulations on the upcoming nuptuals and enjoy.
E.

The fall foliage varies in time and intensity from year to year. In Vermont, near Lake Champlain tends to peak earlier than rest of the state. Your trip might be in the peak period somewhere in the state.

Hotels tend to fill up during foliage season. I volunteer with the Red Cross doing casework for disaster clients. I often have to make quite a few calls to find a hotel room during foliage season (of course, in these cases, I'm trying to find a room immediately).

New England Staters>Cape Cod

October is an awesome time to visit Cape Cod. There are many other activities beyond the beaches, such as the 22 mile cape cod rail trail and the bike trails through the Province lands in Provincetown. There is also a bike trail on both side of the canal! As for kayaking! Well the is the ocean , great white sharks and seals, The marshes all over the cape, Waquoit Bay, Pleasant Bay, Nauset Marsh, Stage Harbor down in Chatham.

Don't miss visiting the sand bar!

Thanks so far. I've been forwarding her these responses and she's marking them down. We got the oversize atlas maps out and are trying to create a "route" for the week or two. Again, appreciate it!
