We have been looking at the netbooks for the girls, and the few I have really looked at did not have cd drives. How do you install programs? I guess they make usb external cd drives for these machines?
Thanks,
Jimmy
According to the following link, one could try either a flash drive or external cd drive. Step by step instructions included.

According to a couple other articles, if you have a home network set up, program installation can be done from the cd drive of another computer as well.
If you have a network, you can share your dvd drive on a regular machine and access it from the netbook.
From your regular machine, right click on the DVD drive, and pick "share".
On the netbook, browse your network, find the machine with the DVD drive, and voila.
Thanks for the replies guys. I found a bundle package that includes an external CD?DVD burner.
The oldest daughter will be heading off to college in another year, so she will need that option.
Have a great weekend!!!
I've been evaluating Netbooks for field use. IFrom what I have learned I can highly recommend the following:
1. A solid state hard drive. According to some manufacturers this provides about 15x the ruggedness of a standard hard drive.
2. An external DVD drive.
3. Upgrade to the maximum amount of RAM. Most come with only 1 GB but have room for 2 or 4 GB. If you run Windows 7 Professional you will be glad you did.
I liked the Samsung so much I bought one for myself.
