I think the Mars rovers accidentally landed in Nevada years ago and NASA operators have been fooled into thinking they are exploring Mars... When the one rover gets to the canyon rim it'll be Las Vegas not Mars on the screens at NASA HQ
I think I see their problem.....
Looks like a Metric Conversion error

Now the rover is less than 31 feet (50 meters) from the rim and is due to pull up to it later this week, mission scientists said Monday (Aug. 8).
Or maybe they took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Not the first time... 😛
I spent several years working on the camera for the Mars Observer. When the spacecraft got to Mars, it disappeared (probably rammed into the planet) during the burn that was supposed to put it into orbit, because of a bad Metric-Imperial conversion in the burn calculations.
Luckily, we had a backup camera, that made it on the Mars Global Surveyor mission, and ended up mapping the surface of Mars. Some of the other six instruments on the MO had no backups, and all the effort involved in building them was lost. I would've hated to have been on one of those teams.
Um...Haven't you guys seen..
the first Transformers?
