..just left in the back of a truck. There use to be three and I've watched them live their life. This last one was butchered by an ice storm in 2007 and got hit by lightning in 2010; it hadn't been the same since.
The tree crew belongs to a riding buddy of mine but I paid the going rate. Between the people he had and the insurance and equipment, I bet he makes less profit than a surveyor; hard as that might be to believe. I bet most of us make a good living surveying, even though we bitch a lot.
At least we don't have to shinny up a 50' tall tree with a 40 pound Stihl hanging from our belt. 😉
Wow, Sad.
I personally, love tree work.
I free climb with no harness, and have done it for years. I have a routine, and stick to it. I have been climbing trees, since I was 4, and just simply enjoy it.

Nate-
T'ain't the going up, tiz the speed of coming down that scares me ! 😛
Cheers,
Derek
Nate,
You need to rethink that policy. My dad had a friend that worked for the telephone company, and did tree work on the side. He was a professional at climbing, and he ended up falling out of a tree doing side work, and ended up a quadrapalegic, and died about 10 or so years later. He left behind 3 or 4 kids.
We all think it won't happen to us, and I ma sure he did too.
Be safe
Thanks Jimmy.
I have been acquiring the required gear.
I did one free hand, about 6 mos ago.
It will be my last free hand.
I now have the gear.
It is slower, to tie off, etc, but yeah, it's time. I aint a spring chicken no more.

cutting the tree down first is my preferred method of tree work.
He he he!!!
So long as if falls the right direction! (Wink)

The only pecan tree I had was a little scronny looking little thing my neighbor talked me into buying. I brought it home and planted it and tended to it. It made it. They told me it wouldn't make nuts for about 10 years. Sure enough 10 years later it started producing right when I moved away to the NC mountains. That was ok since the place I bought had 2 HUGE black walnuts and they produced big time. it was a helluva lot of work shelling them walnuts by hand.
