Dave,

It's for Surveyors too. All of the Safety Fairways in U.S. Waters are ellipsoidal loxodromes (rhumb lines), and therefore when setting platforms offshore, the surveyor must be sure that they do not set the platform in a lease block that also is within the Safety Fairway. It's an iterative problem to solve for the intersection of an ellipsoidal loxodrome with a constant Grid line that is in either a Lambert Conformal Conic projection (Louisiana or Texas) or a UTM Grid offshore everywhere in Federal Waters.
